Novel swine flu discovered in China -- and it has potential to create a second pandemic: report

Hey, maybe people will start wearing masks.

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/06/novel-swine-flu-discovered-in-china-and-it-has-potential-to-create-a-second-pandemic-report/

Snip

The world could be facing a second pandemic as COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe.

“A new strain of flu that has the potential to become pandemic has been identified in China by scientists. It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say,” the BBC reported Monday.

“The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak. They say it has ‘all the hallmarks’ of being highly adapted to infect humans – and needs close monitoring,” the BBC confirmed. “As it’s new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.”

India is more crowded and dirty, but do not hear many viruses originating there. I am curious. Anyone knows the answer?

That it’s common for people too live in close proximity to pigs and poultry in rural China. New diseases appear when the viruses hopscotch from species to species. The 1918 flu was thought to originate in Kansas for the same reason.

And the sheer population size. The more people and livestock you have together, the greater chance of a jump. Poor sanitation makes it worse.

People and animals in close quarters under conditions that make it easier for viruses to jump from one host species to another.

***
[Rapid urbanization] on that scale means forest land is destroyed to create residential areas. Wild animals, forced to move closer to cities and towns, inevitably encounter domestic animals and the human population. Wild animals often harbor viruses; bats, for instance, can carry hundreds of them. And viruses, jumping species to species, can ultimately infect people.

***

On both continents, many families depend on subsistence farming and a minuscule supply of livestock. Disease control, feed supplementation and housing for those animals is extremely limited. Cattle, chickens and pigs, which can carry endemic disease, are often in close contact with each other, a variety of nondomestic animals and humans.

And not just on the farms: Live animal markets, commonplace throughout Asia and Africa, feature crowded conditions and the intimate mixing of multiple species, including humans. This too plays a key role in how a killer pathogen could emerge and spread between species.

***

So is traditional Chinese medicine, which purports to provide remedies for a host of conditions like arthritis, epilepsy and erectile dysfunction. Although no scientific evidence exists to support most of the claims, Asia is an enormous consumer of traditional Chinese medicine products. Tigers, bears, rhinos, pangolins and other animal species are poached so their body parts can be mixed into these questionable medications. This, too, is a major contributor to increasing animal-human interactions. What's more, demand is likely to go up, as online marketing soars along with Asia's relentless economic growth.

Apparently up until 10,000 years ago, humans were cold- and flu-free. Then we started domesticating animals and that's when our troubles began. IIRC, horses gave us the common cold, birds and pigs several strains of flu,and so on.

Moral of the story is that animals eventually extract their revenge when we exploit them for our own purposes, be it for food, beasts of burden, etc.

and I believe they tend to eat each others' feces. They all pass the influenza virus back and forth but are not affected by it. It's the passing back and forth that leads to it evolving so rapidly.

There was a time when European peasants kept their livestock in their homes, and I believe that at least some of the old-time childhood diseases, for example measles, came about when something jumped from cattle to humans.

(begin snip)

But researchers of zoonotic diseases — diseases that jump from animals to humans – pinpoint the wet markets in mainland China as particularly problematic for several reasons. First, these markets often have many different kinds of animals – some wild, some domesticated but not necessarily native to that part of Asia. The stress of captivity in these chaotic markets weakens the animals' immune systems and creates an environment where viruses from different species can mingle, swap bits of their genetic code and spread from one species to another, according to biologist Kevin Olival, vice president for research at the EcoHealth Alliance. When that happens, occasionally a new strain of an animal virus gets a foothold in humans and an outbreak like this current coronavirus erupts.

They've perfected messages to have millions of people in the US to self-destruct.

Who would want the US to self-destruct? And how will trumpf and family make it safely to the USSR? And will their remains ever be found?
