Trump in 'fragile' mood and may drop out of 2020 race if poll numbers don't improve, GOP insiders

Donald Trump may drop out of the 2020 presidential race if he believes he has no chance of winning, a Republican Party operative reportedly told Fox News.

The claim comes in a report in the president’s favourite news outlet that cites a number of GOP insiders who are concerned about Mr Trump’s re-election prospects amid abysmal polling numbers.

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, currently holds an average lead of nine points over the incumbent, according to a tracker of 2020 polls by RealClearPolitics.

Crucially, Mr Trump has lost support from older white voters — typically a bedrock of support for the Republican Party and a group that was crucial to his narrow 2016 victory. Mr Trump is also trailing the former vice president in almost all the swing states.

“It’s too early, but if the polls continue to worsen, you can see a scenario where he drops out,” one anonymous GOP operative told Fox News.

We should be so lucky.

I believe there is a chance he will drop out. If he goes all the way and loses he will be branded a loser. He can spin all he wants to but the undeniable reality that he cannot face is that he wanted to be president and failed. Now...if he quits, his reality is that he was in control of him not being president...and if he wanted it he woulda won.

In his mind, instead of being a quitter, he’ll be a ‘I wanted to do something else’ guy.

Don’t think about this with a rational mind, it isn’t applicable to Trump. A mentally health person would carry on...he’s not mentally healthy.

He files bankruptcy.
He settles lawsuits.
He pays people off to make problems go away.

Trump is the poster boy for quitting.

And I don't want that silver-domed pustule that trails after him like a puppy to simply step into the job.

I want them to go down and take the whole ship with them.

But he is a psychopath narcissist and if it means starting a civil war to protect his ego, so be it.

He would do it late. Like, the last week of October, when ballots are already printed, early voting is happening, mail-in ballots are already on the way in, and there is no way to effectively change over to a new candidate.

Then, he'd blame the loss on him leaving the ticket and crow about how the GOP is nothing without him.

That way, he'd be able to declare victory, at least to himself and his odious spawn.

It's only four more months; I hope he stays in. His political instincts are terrible. Even if he drops out before the convention, it is going to be a big mess if he does it. They would have to decide at the convention who is going to replace him. Pence would probably be the favorite, but it's almost a guarantee that others would challenge him. If he does it after the convention, you are looking at total chaos. He almost has to do it before the convention.

I also am not 100% sure it’d be a good thing. I mean, literally anyone would be better than Trump, but if he gets out it gives Repugs a chance to replace him with someone who can at least fake being somewhat sane.

After he loses, blame the media, IC, never Trumpers, etc. Will say he actually would have won if it wasn't for that. Then resign.

He's in it for the money....and free body guards. So he can't be killed by Russian bank executives when he defaults.

... now he's got to go through with it. But once he loses, he'll go for "broke." He'll steal everything that isn't nailed down and he burn the rest. That's why he needs to be escorted out of the White House in handcuffs.
