Johnny Mandel, the Oscar- and Grammy-winning songwriter of The Shadow of Your Smile, Emily and the theme from MASH, has died. He was 94.
I was so sad to learn that a hero of mine, Johnny Mandel, passed away, wrote Michael Buble on Twitter. He was a genius and one of my favorite writers, arrangers, and personalities. He was a beast.
A dear friend and extraordinary composer arranger and all-around brilliant talent, Johnny Mandel, just passed away, wrote Michael Feinstein on Facebook. The world will never be quite the same without his humor, wit and wry view of life and the human condition. He was truly beyond compare, and nobody could write or arrange the way he did. Lord will we miss him. Lets celebrate him with his music! He would like that.

Mandel was considered one of the finest arrangers of the second half of the 20th century, providing elegant orchestral charts for a wide range of vocalists including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and Hoagy Carmichael.

Cross gently, Johnny.

(65,042 posts)I never verified it, but I once read that Johnny made more than half his money on the royalties and residuals from Suicide Is Painless. (MASH theme song)
With everything else he did, he signed a spectacular deal on that tune, and likely still gets $ when the show plays in syndication.
If accurate, pretty shrewd business move by Johnny!

(5,914 posts)Robert Altman specifically challenged him to write the tune for "the dumbest song ever written" to be used during the funeral scene. Altman would then write the lyrics. When he couldn't come up with lyrics that, in his estimation, were sufficiently stupid, Altman asked his 14-year-old son to do it. Mike Altman wrote the lyrics in five minutes.
Altman has said that his son made far more money on his share of the royalties for that one song than he did making the movie.
It's a testament to how great the music is for that "stupid" song that it's stood the test of time all these years.

I think I'll go watch some mash now.
