(51,593 posts)That is what happened to a friend. His head hurt so much he banged it on the wall over and over. And a ton of vomit (it wasn't a migraine though). He thought it was food poisoning then remembered he was bitten while clearing out the yard.
If H2O Man has this, tell him it may come back in two weeks, even with medicine.

(15,265 posts)Years ago as I climbed out from under a pop up camper that I was freeing up a support jack on my wife yelled out that I had a spider on my calf. I also had a wound there that from an incident early in the week. I quickly back handed my calf and scrambled out from under the camper. Over the next several days my lower leg ballooned and was burning and I ended up in the ER early Saturday moring where they cleaned out the wound and gave intravenous anti-biotics. I don't know if the spider bit me or not.

(10,829 posts)The spiders are ferocious this year. I was bitten 10 days ago and I still have a mild, 5-inch red patch on my underarm. Area was between stingy, achy and crazy itchy. I seriously thought of calling the doctor for a steroid shot but was reluctant to go to the office with rising Covid numbers. Fortunately, I did not run a fever.
Beware the creepy crawlies out there. Nasty this year.
Get well, WaterMan.

(73,537 posts)My son brought me for emergency care last week. The medical team has been in daily contact with me, keeping close attention to all the symptoms. Though I feel less horrible than I did, things are where I was told to see them again today.
Thus far, the full panel of blood tests appears to rule out lymes and Erhlichiosis. Anaplasmosis is another tick-related possibility. Or it may be a spider bite, similar to the one that hospitalized my cousin two weeks ago (it resulted in a serious infection in his intestine, where he had the surgery after being shot in the insane attack by the drunk cop a few years back.)
My son came here to drive me to the doctor. This is good, as I do not feel well enough to drive ....although my shoulders & neck aren't paralyzed as they were late last week, making any driving impossible.
On the bright side, my children all take care of me. My youngest daughter came by in the evening yesterday, and she and I went for a short walk out to my garden. She took some nice photos of it, and hopefully I can post one here soon.
My father used to say that human beings, out of ignorance, would kill off most of the larger living organisms on earth, until the tiny ones would kill off human beings. I try to keep this fully Irish message of hope in mind. (grin)
Peace & love, Patrick

(73,537 posts)On Friday, after going back and forth, the doctor said I could return home, so long as my son kept a close eye on me. She said if I became delirious, he was to bring me to the ER immediately. He looked her in the eye and said, "Inthe case of my father, if he suddenly breaks out in rational thinking, I will know to seek immediate medical attention."

(73,537 posts)my youngest daughter called me. She wanted to be sure I had a ride to the appointment, or she'd have taken off work to transport me. That would have been a lot of driving for her. She reminded me of when she was there to talk to one of my doctors about my brain injury a couple years ago. My daughter said I was too stupid to be trusted to take care of myself; the doctor, who I've known since 1969, said her impression that I was too stubborn to be trusted to take care of myself! Perhaps they are both right.

(9,651 posts)Mine was the most stubborn I ever knew. I'm so glad your daughter still has her dad here so she can tease him and take care of him.
Please take it easy and heal. You are family. We are all one big family here on DU, and we all need each other.
H2O Man
(73,537 posts)I have noticed that my brothers, my father and his brothers, and my paternal male cousins are all as stubborn as a mule! Must be genetic. How it skipped me is a mystery, though both my sons are, too!
My daughter was a bit frustrated that I waited 48 hours until seeking medical attention for the brain injury. I try to see it from her point of view, but old habits are hard to break. We have always been close -- as I am with her sister and brothers -- but became more so when she was the last one in school and living here during the "single parent" years. These days, afer graduating college, she has a good job in human services, working with troubled teens. She lives with her boyfriend, who I like a lot. But if she thinks (or knows) I'm injured or ill, she makes the drive over here to do whatever she can to help me out. I'm proud of the strong young woman she has become.
On a side note: my normal brother from the west coast visited when she was 5. He was teasing her a bit one afternoon, and was happily surprised with her resposes. I remember him saying he was impressed that a 5-year old had mastered sarcasm. He also liked that she knew so many Neil Young songs!
Dem2theMax
(9,651 posts)He was my best friend. He's been gone for almost eight years, and every day I need him for something. Lately, I've really been wishing I could get hugs from him. So hug your daughter for me. Tell her, from one daughter to another, she's doing a good job watching out for you!
H20 Man, I really hate to break this to you, but if you waited 48 hours to go get medical attention for a brain injury, the stubborn did not skip your generation.
Trying to talk my dad into going to the doctor when he needed to go, was like trying to talk a bear out of his den in the middle of hibernation. It just wasn't going to happen!
Thankfully, an ER nurse lived across the street from my parents. So I could always go get backup if need be. Dad would not always listen to me. But if an ER nurse showed up and said he had to go to the doctor, THEN he would go.
Stubborn was his middle name!
I am very glad you are on the mend. Now stay that way!

(33,521 posts)...such a bite some years back. My hand swelled up to the size of a small cantaloupe.
It was very painful.
Brown recluses are very common, but are, happily, as their name implies, reclusive. I met mine in a wood pile.
I thought I was going to lose the hand. However I recovered nicely with no longterm effects, and we all wish him the same recovery i was fortunate to enjoy.

(19,201 posts)There are some nasty creepy-crawlies out there. They don't mean to harm us if we let them be, but as we all know, if we invade their territory and their little insect reflexes think they're being attacked, they respond in the only way they're programmed. I've been bitten a few times with some crazy reactions, and now I have to carry an EpiPen wherever I go.
Best of luck to you, H2OMan. I know you'll be back outside and enjoying life again very soon. Get well soon, amigo.
