Some folks were throwing out a predicted death toll of 200-250k by election day. At the time I was thinking "No way!"
I'm losing that feeling as each day goes by. Someone needs to stomp on the brakes here, and there's nobody at the wheel.

(2,312 posts)Between October 1929 and August 1945, this country was either in an economic depression or a global war. The vast majority of its citizens sacrificed their own comfort for the greater good. Gas, sugar, coffee, nylon stockings were rationed during WWII. We collected scrap metal for the manufacture of ammunition and war machinery. We grew Victory Gardens to feed our families so mass-produced foods could go to our soldiers, sailors, pilots and Marines. But now, three months wearing a mask to go grocery shopping is too much. Not being able to drink in a tavern with crowds of others for a short time is a bridge too far. Cutting one's own hair somehow equates to Stalinism ... or Nazism or some other nonsense. Talk about a country of wimps.

American culture has become drastically more materialistic. It was easy for the creators of want to cultivate this in our society when the great hypnotic cathode tube moved into nearly every home. Madison Avenue's reprogramming was complete.
Americans began to "need" more and more things, bigger and bigger homes, flashier, shinier. In the latter half of that period, technology was able to stoke demands for immediate gratification. Now, people have no patience, with each other, with their wants, with the natural flow of time and science. Community takes a back seat to individual selfishness.
That's what people like me mean when we doubt modern society has what it takes to weather a one-two punch like the Great Depression followed by World War II.

(7,417 posts)than it really is because of cable news coverage. There are plenty of places throughout the nation where any modest protests that take place are pretty innocuous. I also have doubts they will last through the end of summer because Americans are so easily distracted.

(25,858 posts)Unless the entire country shuts down again, people are absolutely blocked from going into stores, churches, schools, you name it, without being masked. And everyone observes social distancing.
But that shut down isn't going to happen. Yeah, some states are rolling back a bit about opening up, but what's probably going to happen is that cases/deaths will drop a little, they'll open up again, cases/deaths will spike, they'll shut a little bit down. At least into the fall. And then, if that potentially pandemic-causing flu virus gets out of China, we'll have something of a disease trifecta happening. Covid-19, influenza, and all the other things that are getting out of hand because of this.

To conflate their personal freedom with these absolute necessities is a false narrative and a statement from our lowest common denominators all things considered.
They are participating in a stubborn and relentless race to extreme illness, organ failure, brain damage and potentially lifelong disabilities and death and trying to drag everyone along with them.

(31,261 posts)ending up in the hospital, though Florida is running out of ICU beds, the governor still is saying mostly young people that can take sars-cov-2 are getting infected, his head is firmly shoved up his ass. I was coming out of a department store a couple of hours ago and saw a NURSE entering without a facemask, it is freaking insane, more than likely she has to wear one at work. I was in Best Buy earlier and maybe 95% of everyone and 100% of employees were wearing masks, that was good to see. I actually saw a young couple come up without masks, the guy refused to enter, even as the woman tried to get him to. I was talking to a sales rep when both came in with masks on, apparently the guy went back to their vehicle and got masks.

ProfessorGAC
(65,044 posts)I was looking at FL demographics yesterday.
The proportion of people under 30 was way higher recently than the overall US proportion.
Since those folks don't die at the same percentage, that might explain the declining death per cases rate.
It's only one state, so I'm broadly extrapolating.
Here in Illinois the death rate is down, but just modestly. Yesterday under 5%, day before 2%. Kind of bobbing up & down.
But positivity rate has averaged 2.7 the last 10 days.
So, less cases but deaths haven't fall by the same %.
I have not researched it, but I haven't read any substantial change in death demographics.
I guess we'll see in another 7-10 days.

Blue_true
(31,261 posts)started to die off 5 years later.
What I am afraid of with SAR-COV-2 is that it puts a marker in people that it infects. Scientists believe that immunity lasts only 2-3 months, so sans a cure or a vaccine, SARS-COV-2 can technically reinfect a person and pick up from where it left off. Some of the earliest cases of people getting sick and surviving were in China, but that is not a good observation area because China locked down tight as a drum and still reacts vigorously to infection spikes, plus China is secretive. Whether previously sick people that survive the first infection from the virus get it again and die in places like Italy or Spain is worth watching.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)It ravages the lungs and the immune system. I haven't really heard much about the long term effects, but I can't imagine that those who have caught the virus will be in a good position to hold up under future viral infections. It still does damage, even if it doesn't kill you. This is why I have not left my apartment in three months. I'm quite scared of how this will play out over time.
The people who have caugh the virus - even if they were asymptomatic and survived - are still very compromised already and at a disadvantage. I suppose we will see how this plays out in the fall when our regular flu season comes in on top of this. I'm not optimistic. This could be like 1918 all over again.
