Marine veteran and former police officer Josh Hicks won the Democratic primary in Kentucky's 6th District on Tuesday and will face off against Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) in November.
Hicks, also an attorney, won with 72 percent of the vote, easily prevailing over rival Daniel Kemph in the June 23 primary, according to The Associated Press.
Results were revealed Tuesday after taking into account the flood of mailed-in ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic. Barr was declared the winner of the GOP primary last week.
Hicks switched parties from Republican to Democrat in 2016, citing his lack of faith in President Trump's Republican Party.

(95,247 posts)That election of even a moderate Democrat to replace an incumbent Republican is a move to the left in that district.

(63,221 posts)I think we are agreeing, but I'm not sure.
They now have a Dem governor, and it will be a longshot to get a Dem senator, but it's possible, and it looks good for Dems in this race.
I am hoping KY is finally waking up and getting tired of being one of the most impoverished, least educated, fiscally unstable, socially backwards states in the union.
I would think they might be ready for a change for the better.

(95,247 posts)In a district like this, there is no point to complaining a candidate is not someone who assorted 'our revolution' types could swoon over. If it replaces a Republican with a moderate Democratic, a district has moved to the left, and the necessity is to solidify that, to make it a one way ratchet that won't go back to the right but may advance further to the left in time.
