Obama campaign deputy manager Stephanie Cutter said Tuesday that Mitt Romney's comment that he has given up on winning 47 percent of Americans is the "opposite" of President Obama's 2008 remark about Americans clinging to guns and religion. Both comments were made at private fundraisers.
" Obama) was talking about how some people get frustrated by their circumstances and react to that," Cutter said. "And that we need to bring everybody together and talk to everybody about how we are gonna strengthen middle-class security. Mitt Romney was saying the exact opposite, that 47 percent of the country are never gonna vote for him because they don't take personal responsibility for themselves, they consider themselves victims and they are never gonna vote for him. They are not his concern. So it's the exact opposite."

(116,464 posts)media pundits are going to harp on this false equivalency. Now is the perfect time to make this clear, when the pundits and people like Kristol have to admit that Mitt fucked up.

(22,145 posts)The media ran with the out of context comment by Pres. Obama, however, this is different. It was not out of context and I think if the whole video is shown, there will be some other unpleasant surprises for Romney and his campaign staff.

(53,339 posts)In the last paragraph he makes the point that you have to keep going out and talking to both the folks who agree with you and the folks who don't. HE doesn't write anyone off, not even those who oppose him:
"But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress, uh, when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in, in, Pennsylvania, a lot, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced 'em. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate, and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to their guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or ... uh, anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
"Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background, um, there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. Uh, and you can go into places where you think that I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing. So ... The Wielding Truth
(11,415 posts)is talking to elite $50,000 a plate power mongers.
Obama is explaining how everyone should be respected and we should understand that people look to things to give them an individual sense of power or hope.
Romney is just dismissing those who are in need and convincing the rich to be even more oblivious to the suffering of the poor and that he is sure that it's not part of his job to worry about that worthless part of America. It's the shareholders not the workers mentality.
Very different situations with different intent and purpose.
