Patrick Mahomes reportedly signs the largest contract in the history of U.S. sports -- over $427 mil.

Patrick Mahomes, a 24-year-old quarterback who led the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl win on Feb. 2, 2020, was rewarded with a 10-year contract extension that ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter says is the biggest in U.S. sports history.

According to Schefter, Mahomes was owed $27.6 million over two years on his existing deal, and the extension is worth at least $400 million. Until now, the largest U.S. sports contract belonged to baseball player Mike Trout, at $426.5 million.

On Feb. 2, 2020, Mahomes was the youngest quarterback to ever be named a Super Bowl MVP, and he was named the NFL’s MVP for the 2018 season.

It’s a bit obscene that throwing a ball can be worth that much more than someone who provides essential services but the market is the market I suppose. You’re not going to get ten million people to tune in and watch a teacher lecturing a third grade class on fractions.

With the cap, having one player making that much makes keeping talent hard. Hopefully he renegotiates it lower in years 4 and 5.

but this doesn't make sense on a human basis to me. To begin with, no one knows how the virus is going to change pro sports in the near or the long term. I get the planning for the future part but right now especially, is this where resources, either public or private should be directed? As one bump on a log to another, this just doesn't have a good feel to me and I believe we, as fellow humans should be able to do better.

I love to watch him. He is exciting and does things that other QB’s do not, but when you take up that much of the limited pie, there is only so much left to sign talent around you.

That said, I am a Patriots fan, and am all in on Cam! Go Pats.

He is a once in a generation player and is worth so much for a small market like ours.

He was a very bright spot for us in 2020 and hopefully they'll cancel the 2020-2021 season so we can be works champions again for another year without any effort. That will surely make this team one to remember for many decades to come!
