Imagine what the news would be if we had a Democratic president right now.

Fox News would herding the whole country towards a major realignment to the right and a huge segment of America would trundle right along behind.

They would attack on shut downs. They would attack on opening up. They would attack every possible prevention measure and blame the whole thing on the Democrats.

We will probably get a good taste of this anyway if Biden is elected. A lot of the country will immediately forget that Trump brought this on and try to lay the whole thing on Democrats but hopefully they won't be too effective. If the pandemic is brought under control next year the president, whoever he is, will get the credit.

It's not a good thing that a Democrat wasn't in control but it would have been bad for the future of the Democratic party.

1. We would not have a permanent conservative SCOTUS majority either

The argument that we would become more conservative with a liberal President or vice versa is a bit circular. Of course, this happens in politics, but I don’t think a President Clinton would have botched the pandemic response. I’m not saying that the virus would not have reached the US or we would not need shutdowns, but the response probably would have mirrored the European countries. Furthermore, and this could be a negative, there may have been many more Republican governors in office had Clinton won.

but it still would have been bad and the right would be jumping all over her, blaming her for the whole thing.
It wouldn't be hard to convince the public that she bungled it because we wouldn't have Trump's extreme bungling for comparison.

2. Traditionally Democrats get 45 minutes to fix everything

Traditionally D’s get 45 minutes to fix everything before the media is all over the “Isn’t it time for _____ to take ownership of this crisis?”

I remember Obama being president for less than a year before everything that Bush spent 8 years breaking was suddenly 100% Obama’s fault.

apparatus for the whole nation. He will also re-create the pandemic control office that trump dissolved, as well as re-establishing delegations on the ground with epidemiologists and pandemic experts in China, Africa and other continents where new virus can be monitored and headed off.

Biden undoubtedly still has the names of the people that served in these positions during the Obama/Biden admin.

Looks like we have to wait until Jan. to get a competent government in place to actually tackle and rid the country of this virus.

6. What would be happening...

...is that we'd have had a much longer lockdown, and actual testing/contact-tracing measures put in place so that, when we did re-open, any new outbreaks could be controlled with far fewer people getting sick.

This would, of course, have meant a great deal more spending on stimuli -- steady cash payments to families and businesses, a boost to unemployment insurance, etc.

If the Republicans had a majority in either chamber of Congress, they'd block such measures out of "fiscal responsibility," with the plan that, eventually, people would get desperate and demand to re-open anyway, and blame the Democratic president for leading us to economic ruin and starvation, even though it was the Republicans blocking relief that was causing it.

If they lacked a majority in either chamber, we'd simply get non-stop rhetoric about how the "tax-and-spend Democrat leadership" was bankrupting the country, and would lead us into a decade-long depression unless they were voted out. And, of course, the usual insisting that every public-safety measure, no matter how mild, was the first step on the way to Socialist Totalitarianism.
