http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/09/foreshadowing_libya.phpIn the newly released full Mojo/Romney tapes, about 4 minutes in on tape one, Romney starts to talk about what he refers to as the Jimmy Carter election, i.e., 1980. He then goes on to talk about how the hostage crisis and the failed rescue mission Desert One were pervasive issues through the 1980 election. Then at the end he says that if something of that nature presents itself I will work to find a way to take advantage of the opportunity.
He has a couple stopped and started sentences and at some points its not entirely clear to me what his meaning is. But on this last point he seems to be saying that if a major international crisis erupted hed do what he could to turn it to political advantage.
Please take a listen. Its about four minutes in, on the 1st of the two videos here. What do you make of it?

Mitt: If something of that nature presents itself, I'll work to take advantage of it.
Holy shit!

...but if this was planned to help the Romney campaign, people were killed as a result.
Given Mitt's reaction (almost as if he knew there were going to be attacks), and comments on the tape, something smells fishy.
The timing of his response also plays into the speculation because issuing it before all the facts were known, he failed to offer condolences to the families of the victims. It almost appears as if he had a statement prepared and was lying in wait.

(36,418 posts)Lack of imagination, and he's not a spook insider like GHW, so he's not equipped (and his organization isn't trained and prepared) to recognize and maximize potential gains from national security stumbles and failures. More than anything, Romney doesn't have the powerful friends in the major media that Reagan and Bush had. The Iran Hostage "Crisis" and the "Iran Gas Crisis" were really their invention.
He doesn't have what it takes to be a real villain, like Poppy.
