i'm not sure exactly what causes phlegm production, but i'm wondering if the blood clotting might not be a "complication" of covid-19 that's normally a respiratory disease.
could it be the other way around? that is, could it be that it's primarily a blood clotting disease and the respiratory symptoms we see are actually the "complication", to my non-medical intuition, it could make sense that if microclots form in the lungs, the body goes crazy generating phlegm to try to get you to cough out the clots.
