Poverty is a destabilizing force that must be efficiently countered. We really don't have any other sensible and prudent choice. The school lunch program was initiated in the mid 40's because so many of the young men who came to sign up were undernourished and many were rejected because of this. It was a tragic loss for the war effort. Educating our young people to be productive members of society is essential to a resilient economy and a peaceful society.

Having struggling working classes wastes so much potential that we need to move forward, as well. When the middles classes suffer and shrink the country suffers.
