I never, ever post on facebook (I troll) but today I posted Romney's 47% comment and was so furious I posted the following: Ok- I don't usually do this but here goes-I am one of that 47% and tired of feeling shamed for it! Life has thrown me more than one curveball- but NO ONE is going to tell me I do not take personal responsibility for my life! I did not pay any federal income tax last year. I paid 7000+ in property taxes, 10%+sales taxes, and live below the poverty level. My focus has been on raising aware, healthy children who I hope will have safety nets available for them if they fall in bad times. I have opened my home and wallet to those less fortunate than I (I am still blessed) and have accepted help from my caring neighbors when I needed it. I work multiple part time jobs, but I need healthcare and Pell grants to raise my children out of poverty.I am not a victim and I believe the government has a responsibility to take some care of those who struggle. If you think that is wrong BRING IT ON!
I'm feeling vulnerable since I don't share how difficult day to day life is for me. Even here I feel ashamed saying I didn't pay (owe) any federal income tax last year I would love to make enough to pay, but I do pay plenty of tax... Just looking for feedback. Peace

People need to hear about real life situations and circumstances that pull us under at times like a tide. Some we can foresee and try to offset, some we cannot. Life is not a magical land for most of us. We do what we have to do. Nobody should be judged on how they provide for their family.
You need not worry about what others think. You know who you are and what shoes you need to fill, and most importantly you are doing it gallantly.

In Minnesota I know someone that has a house assessed at $230,000 and prop taxes are nominally about $3800, but about half is rebated.

That $7000 is what struck me too. Sometimes you've just got to downsize.
We lived in a small 3/1 home when I was a kid, and my father was also engaged in building a garage, spare room out back when he had a heart-attack and died. He wasn't very far along, so instead of finishing it, we just took up the form boards. With us, there wasn't much to downsize to, save outside.

(39,961 posts)at the family business. I've never needed a safety net, but I certainly don't begrudge those that do.
Most of the people who need social safety nets have the children that Republicans say should be born, but then want to deny even food in their mouths. If a five year old needs food in their mouth, a roof over their head, and *gasp* healthcare, you are a heartless person for claiming that their parents are greedy for doing everything to help their children have all three.
I pay my taxes. I don't mind when they go to feed a hungry child. I do mind when I hear a Republican claim that all single mothers usually have a boyfriend on the couch that is a drug dealer on the side. I do mind when I hear public workers get disparaged because they have a pension and can afford to retire. I do mind when I hear that kids who depend on school lunches shouldn't get fed.
I give a damn about having a civil society, and I feel put upon by no one, since I helped finance it. It's the price I pay for not having seniors, the disabled, and children dying in the street.

(5,810 posts)Well, then you really know who your true friends are and which ones are not.
Today my daughter in law's mother posted on FB her disappointment in Romney. She had planned to vote for this man and because of what was released on the video she says she is not "for him anymore". I could have cheered aloud and DID! I could not comment on her FB posting, however, because I've had to stop posting on FB as it was causing issues with my son and his wife. (mostly his wife) They are big Romney (and especially Ryan) supporters. I tried everything I knew to get them to understand that if they voted for RR that they were voting AGAINST their best interests. But I got nowhere and so had to stop putting political comments on FB. With her mom's comments today, I am hoping against hope that they will see that and investigate and read more and change their minds, too.
So you never know what good you will have done by posting what you did. Even if one person understands the situation better and sees why a vote for RR is a bad thing, you will have done a good thing for the rest of us!

The R's meme is totally inaccurate. They embrace a picture of low income people in a stereotype that is not rooted in reality. You live in reality where wages are lower, businesses hire part-time to avoid paying much in benefits and the cost of living is going up. You have a lot of company.
rMoney and his friends are getting what they want - lower tax rates and more loopholes. The breaks for low income, that are fashioned by the GOP by the way, are to keep people from rioting in the streets while the 1% walks away.

As a side note, I have noticed that abusive people refer to the people they are abusing as "victims". Then the "victim" is supposed to be ashamed of being a victim, instead of noticing that they are being abused. Romney's comments are abusive, disrespectful and unfit for a leader.

(14,040 posts)in my early 20's I was working a full-time job without health benefits. While playing co-ed softball, a big guy slid into me, cleats up, breaking my leg in 4 places and requiring surgery to repair the break. I was in a cast for 7 months (it was taking a long time for my bones to mend). I couldn't work during that time because I worked in a production environment that required I be on my feet for 8 hours a day. In order to pay my hospital bills and other bills, the hospital got me hooked up with welfare. I was on welfare for 7 months (including food stamps).
The reason I don't feel ashamed about relating this story is because I pay taxes. I pay into a system that is there to help people when they are in need. I know the reality that there are some people that could do better for themselves but simply choose to stay on welfare instead but there are many more people like me (and possibly you) who need a hand UP, not a hand out. Once I was able to go back to work (fortunately the company I'd been working at held my position), I started contributing to the system again (I also had to promise the state of Pennsylvania if I ever won the lottery, I'd pay back what the state gave me). Anyway, this is what these programs are there for and screw anyone who doesn't like it. For all the talk of how great America is by Republicans, one of the things that make's America great is its willingness to help people who need the help.

(570 posts)Please don't be ashamed. I don't pay income taxes right now either, although I do pay property taxes. I lost my job in finance two years ago and went back to school. I've got one more year to finish for my Masters degree and start a new career. So far I've spent every penny I had in savings, cashed out my meager 401K and pension, taken out $40K in loans, and my unemployment has run out. Now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to make it through this next year. My parents are deceased, so that makes it a little hard to borrow money from them. (sarcasm)
When I had my $50K a year salary, I honestly didn't mind paying my taxes. I remembered when I was a single mom and on public assistance and always felt that by paying my taxes that maybe I was helping another struggling single mom. I regularly donated to the thrift stores that I had shopped in to clothe my daughter as a way of giving back. I never even asked for a receipt for my taxes. For me that wasn't the point.
Lately I've been feeling really low for not working. I feel guilty about it, at times on the verge of giving up. Reading your post helped with that. Thank you for telling your story. It helps to know that neither of us are alone in our struggles. We've just got to stick together and keep on keeping on.
Take care.

(39,961 posts)you need public assistance. That's the story here. Most of the time, however, it is people with children, not single people that need help.
I'd as soon take a tax break over taking food out of a child's mouth as I would run Paul Ryan's 2:45 mile.
You can lie your way to the top, but you can't lie your way out of reality - like hungry children that are here, whether you are anti-abortion or not, and still need to be fed.

(28,552 posts)... the libertarian meme that you are a useless victim if you don't pay income tax is laughable.
Plenty of billionaires don't pay income tax.
The 47% statistic is intentionally misleading in that it includes children, the elderly, military personnel, the disabled and others who would not reasonably be expected to pay income tax.
People who buy into this mindset better think long and hard about how hypocritical they will feel some day.

(3,557 posts)The country is dependant on people who make up the bottom tier of the labor force and work part time jobs. More importantly devoted mothers who bust their ass to give their kids as much of a leg up as they can are what we need.
I pay income tax and I'm glad that at least some of it goes to helping my fellow human beings. I'd rather it go to you - someone who is busting their butt to scrape by - than some BS military expenditure or some war that we don't need.
Maybe this is my socialist ideology poking its head out, but I hate how our society pisses all over the people who work in the lower income jobs. As much as we need doctors and scientist, we also need store clerks and low-wage assemly line workers. The people who make up the "bottom" need to be valued by society just as much as engineers, doctors, and scientist are.
Don't ever feel ashamed for what you wrote or where you are in life.
I came from a lower-tier family. My father worked as a fry-cook and my mother was a waitress. At this point in their lives (they are nearly 60) they don't have a retirement fund because they gave everything to me and my brother. My parents stressed education and gave my brother and me everything they could to get us into and through college. If I wouldn't have had parents who gave a damn - the type of parent that you sound like - then I wouldn't be where I am in life today.
Keep on keeping on and hold your head up high!

(5,754 posts)and my work is almost totally dependent on the government. Without NIH funding, there would be very few advances in health care.

(3,557 posts)I'm a chemist for the federal government (I work for Department of Treasury). I love the work I do, but I don't feel comfortable getting into it on a public forum. Working for the government gives me an awesome sense of fulfillment and I love making a positive contribution to our society.
Also, as far as government handouts go, if it wasn't for veterans highering preference there is no way that I would have gotten my foot in the door at the organization I work at. I had no prior experience working in a lab setting and the government really threw me a bone on this. As a result, they have an absolutely devoted employee.

(8,219 posts)That is about 600000 to 700000 in real estate you are sitting on if that is the case. That is more than most folks will ever come close to in their lives of having.

(3,557 posts)I live an hour north of NYC and property tax in my area is out of control. For a $250,000 house (this would get you 2-3 bedrooms and 1,300-1,500 SQFT on a 1/4 acre - a typical smallish house) you can expect to pay about $6-7,000 a year in property tax.
A coworker of mine lives in another town near mine and she pays close to $13,000 a year in property tax for a $300,000 home (3 bedrooms, 1,900 SQFT on a 1/2 acre)

(1,917 posts)How many of Romney's supporters paid $0.00 in income taxes?
I would bet more than one imagines and they don't worry about putting food on the table.
That IS a lot of property tax...

(895 posts)I live in Illinois (suburb of Chicago) and yes my property taxes are over $7000. My home was appraised @300,000 but I would be lucky to get 250,000. Gratefully, unlike many I do not owe more than it is worth. I have filed every paper for every exemption and my taxes still went up 20% this year. Not sure what else I can do?

(25,415 posts)But I live in Connecticut where property taxes are about that high. Mine is over 5000 but my house is worth less. We have mill rates.

(18,124 posts)Nope, no mistake. I've literally worked since I was 11 years old. Not complaining, just a fact. You sound extremely responsible about caring for yourself and your children 47percenter...no matter what the 1 percenter says. You have my respect. Worked for 50+ years. retired and part of the 47percenters and proud of it. You pay your fair share unlike most of the 1percenters. Keep your head high and vision forward. Peace, backatcha!

(7,515 posts)shame since they haven't paid federal income taxes in years? Do you think any of the billionaires who game the system and pay very little in tax feel any shame? Romney certainly doesn't feel any shame. Trillions of corporate dollars remain offshore in order to evade taxes and you can bet your butt they brag about it amongst themselves...no shame there.
You should feel anger that our government has been so taken over by corporations and big money it does very little to help real people....I owed taxes in 2011, I'm retired and receive a one half of my former husband's pension check and a small Social Security check. I know I am fortunate to have an income that covers all of my needs and my usually modest wants, but I still become furious when I think of how little the corporations and the rich do to support this country they claim to love.
I hope your situation improves soon....Hold your head high you are neither a moocher nor a taker but a hardworking citizen who could use some well deserved help.

(5,792 posts)I have been causing the right kind of hell on my facebook page and those who are thinking we will have Sharia law any time are biting at the bit. One told me this morning I needed to get my head out of the sand. They now know they should not have done that. I love DU it gives me so many facts that I can use in my tactful answers to these brainwashed lot.
You posted a great comment on your facebook and many might just change their minds because of your post xo.

(6,291 posts)I am like you. I'm in the 47% and those Romney comments made me feel really bad. But what has been worse is listening to various republican's claim that Romney is right and that this is a big political question that needs to be discussed.
I once paid huge amounts of taxes, I have a very fragile child who requires lots of support, so I too cut back on work that pays very much so that I can take care of her needs.
We are not alone. There are many of us.
But we SHOULD NOT FEEL BAD!!!!!!!!!!
They win when we do.
I am proud that you posted what you did on Facebook. I am considering posting something similar.
As someone said above this is what abusers do- they call the people being picked on victims and thus shame us- typical bully tactics.
Hugs and keep doing what you are doing!

(47,992 posts)When that contract is disrespected, we have a patriotic DUTY to speak with one another, anyone and everyone, about that.
We have that solemn duty, because, if the contract is not honored, THERE IS NO NATION.

(47,992 posts)all of the individual members of the group, who CHOOSE to abide by the agreed upon connections that make the group the group that it is, . . . that is, government, as the agent of our group, OWES all of the individual members of the group REAL VALUE compensation for their individual free assents to be members of the group.
Failing that social contract negates the obligations of the lesser empowered party to the contract.
More simply put, this Golden Rule radical suggests that all of us apply the Golden Rule to everything and, then, consider: If what you have to offer is disrespected and/or rejected, why doesn't the Golden Rule justify the way you're being treated as a model for how you may (freely choose, I hope) to treat those who have established that modality as the principle of your relationship?
If you're being used, without regard for your own humanity, USING becomes the "law of the land."
Using others, without regard for their humanity, this is what Republicans are promoting in the Romney/Ryan candidacy. THAT's what he was promoting to his bundlers about the 47%
