Some of the consultants expressed intense anger for the Never Trump group The Lincoln Project, whose members have been asserting that a Biden victory is the only way to cleanse the GOP of Trumpism. One of them told Miller: Theres no coming back for these Lincoln Project motherfuckers, it doesnt matter what is next. They are madder at [Republican senators] than [at] Trump, for sure.

This is our mission, we said it from the beginning: were going to defeat Trump, and Trumpism, and his enablers.

(31,261 posts)If the Lincoln Project people want to stay republicans and rid their party of corrosive people, I am ok with that as long as they admit up to their former role empowering the type of people that seized their party.

(31,261 posts)At this type, the people they have issues with are the very same ones that we have issues with, so if they help us get rid of those people, more power to them. We can fight them again on the other side, I am ok with that possibility.

(13,043 posts)The fate of this country is at stake. We need the Lincoln Project folks to be on our side. Hopefully they will convince sensible Republicans and Independents to swing their vote our side.

(3,396 posts)And some progressive party takes hold (not the Green Party, someone saner please). The new party and the Democrats become the main US political parties.
It would be better still if the Republican Party becomes that progressive party, going back to their roots. But that seems very unlikely.

(10,011 posts)Their brand of Christianity is precisely why I think our founders inserted an amendment that we all have a right to freedom from religion. Religious crazies have been around for millennia, and for those same millennia they have tried to control how everyone else behaves while they ignore the very teachings they claim to love. As ever, its really just political power they love.

(18,470 posts)Such as the 30 Years' War, which cost some eight million people their lives. It was started when Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II decided to impose religious unity and wipe out Protestantism within the Empire, making Catholicism the sole religion in his realm. Needless to say that didn't go too well.
That and other conflicts were a big reason why the founding fathers guaranteed freedom of or from religion in the 1A. They didn't want the US to become a new front in a religious war.

(23,690 posts)for their party, or call it something else, like Lincolnonians. Who knows. But they are creating a space for conservative Republicans who are not Trumpians or Trump enablers to reconnect and pursue their agenda without the stain of Trump. They are never going to be Democrats or even unaffiliated Independents. They want a strong conservative party with principles; no Trump, McConnell, Rubio, Nunes, R. Scott, Graham, and others encouraged by Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham. You'll see, next election they'll be supporting a whole cadre of Republicans who never supported Trump.
I appreciate what they've been doing, it shows they have character and values, but they will not become Democrats.
The key is the Democratic Party will need to be ready to oppose them.
stopdiggin
(11,316 posts)but they are NOT Democrats. They do not support Democratic values and positions (and have never claimed to). And any idea that they will be "joining" us -- is pure delusion. Come 24 -- Joe Biden will be an incompetent wreck and utter failure at the job -- and Nikki Haley will be descending from the heavens on a cloud.
They deserve every bit of praise they can get for attempting (as all other Rs have refused) to address a clear danger to our country. But that's it.
Keep your eye on the ball Democrats!! --- ---

(18,470 posts)He was not a fan of them. Just about everything he said has come to pass with today's GOP.
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.
Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.
It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.
Democrats have not been perfect about this either but they actually try to govern first and think of party second. After this is all over and the GOP is buried and seen with the same revulsion of the Nazi party, I think the focus has to be on making sure that partisan politics can never again be allowed to poison the well in this country. We have to make sure that people in government service - civil, military, or elective - are duty bound to put the interests of this country first and the party a distant second.
I can remember growing up there were times when Republicans would support Democrats just to keep the Kluxers out of elective office, like when Duke ran in Louisiana. Now the party is the KKK without the sheets.

It's July and we have four months to go. ANYTHING could happen.
Americans have short memories and are influenced by the almighty dollar. If the economy turns around, people will forget March-May like it never happened, and Trump will be re-elected.
I truly hope that the Lincoln Project ads get uglier over the next four months.

(4,111 posts)while I greatly appreciate what they're doing now and how they're doing it, we shouldn't be so naive as to think they're going to become Democrats after Trump is gone. I believe part of the reason they began this endeavor was to try to take away the stink of having created this monster. Once he's gone, they'll return to being consultants and enablers for the John Kasichs and Mitt Romneys of the world who are no friends to the working class, immigrants or people of color.

(3,417 posts)This country is stronger and healthier when issues are debated by honest liberals, conservatives, and independents. If the GOP represented views beneficial to the greater good FOR ALL, we can have an honest discussion about free markets vs. regulated capitalism.
We do not have to hate each other to have conversations about the common good. There ARE GOOD PEOPLE who may see common prosperity through a different lens. That's OK.
If reasonable Republicans are able to wrestle control of the party back from the racists and fundamentalists, I will be happy to restore civil debate.
It's a long shot, I know. The big money and zealous propaganda machine are a formidable enemy. We must try, however, to return to comity.
