Muhammad Abdul Muhaymin Jr. used to carry his tiny dog Chiquita everywhere he went. She helped alleviate the symptoms of some of the mental illnesses he had been diagnosed with years earlier. And in the moments before Phoenix police officers held him down while he yelled that he couldn't breathe and then died, Chiquita was what he was most worried about.
He didn't want to set her on the ground while officers arrested him. He begged them to call his sister to come to get the dog first. The officers ignored him.

In the police video showing the final minutes of Muhaymin's life, Chiquita can be seen pacing back and forth in the background. Muhaymin's love and dedication to Chiquita was extended to his friends and family, his sister Tonya Davis recently said.

"When my brother loved, he really loved," she said.

Three years of silence

In January 2017, Muhaymin, 43, was killed by Phoenix police officers after four officers piled on his back, some pressing their knees into his neck.

"I cannot breathe," he repeatedly said before he died.

The Medical Examiner's Office later ruled Muhaymin's death a homicide. None of the officers were ever criminally charged. They still work for the Police Department.

Just think how many cases there are that we don't know about.

It really hurts my soul.

Disputes such as this should not be a police call. He wasn't being violent. No reason for police involvement. I understand their stance on not allowing the animal in. However again, if we had other conflict resolution resources available, this could have been resolved without police involvement. Perhaps putting money into the community center creating a space for people with emotional pets

I am sure there are many many more cases like this and ticky tacky non violent offenses make it all the more horrific. I bet the outstanding warrant was for some other BS.
