Schools can not even control lice-how the fuck are they gonna control a virus?

I am a teacher and I am terrified of going back. I teach PBS

those are the hitters, spitters, defiant as hell and present a whole hosts of challenges. We have to be trained to restrain and remove. This is not gonna be good.

I’m a nurse practitioner in a pediatric office. We have 3 locations. The one in which I work is only doing well visits right now, which suits me just fine. That will have to change, most likely, once kids are back in school, and I, too, am terrified. I’m 69, so there’s one risk factor. I’m on meds for A fib, so there’s another. My husband is 75. My mom lives near me - she is 98. Not only do I not want to get this damn thing myself, I certainly do not want to give it to either of them.

At our location where sick visits are being done, if someone has suspicious symptoms and needs a COVID-19 test, one of the pediatricians dons full PPE and goes out to the patient’s car and gets the sample there. This is the greater Chicago area. It get damn cold here from November thru at least the end of March - well below freezing, and hellish windchills. Blizzards. Pouring rain. Are we supposed to go out to patients’ cars in conditions like that?

She is, shall we say, not optimistic about the prospects of getting full compliance on safety procedures from students and staff. Any teacher with a little experience can probably scan the list of students slated to be in their class this year, and pick out with amazing accuracy which ones will fall short of the mark in any number of ways.

And that would be in a system where there are clear protocols and practices, adequate staffing and space, well-stocked PPE, and good training of all personnel as well as adequate instruction for parents before they send little Olivia and little Jeffrey off to P.S. 1. Anyone want to bet me that won't be the case under the Trump regime as currently constituted?

It was big in the 60's and 70's but I don't think I have ever met anyone under 30 named Jeffrey.

But the kids in my less troublesome classes would cough or sneeze on me as well.

The Straight-A and Attendance Award kids could be the scariest.

Oh yeah, kid, I should praise you for your snot-covered homework. You didn't let that cold or flu stop you.

Going to school or work sick and spreading germs around isn't something that should be celebrated but it frequently is in our culture.

My wife and I were science teachers when we married. We'd worked in biology and medical labs. My wife only had to scold me once for grading papers on our kitchen table.
