(61 posts)Yes, Jimmy Carter does stand out apart from the crowd - or rather the status quo. I think he was truly one of the best presidents that we've had - that I can remember. He had integrity, is kind and honest, which is sorely lacking these days.
Maybe his grandson will run for President one day.

There's been very, very few people in the history of this planet who've done more good than this fine man. Sadly I see him denigrated by all Republicans and some Democrats. Wisdom, kindness and grace mean so little here.
President Carter is a National Treasure.
Who will never receive his due.

(81,322 posts)do good for the world, using their presidential leverage. What did reagan do? Aim straight for the "mashed potato circuit," where he intended to rake in the speaking fees (the first one out of the gate, with the Japanese, paid him two million dollars). He got only that far before his Alzheimers became unavoidable.
I'm delighted with this whole turn of events. I feel like it's Carter's Revenge. Just think of it - the smug self-satisfied poseur who would presume to declare himself the heir of st. ronnie - might actually wind up getting his presidential balloon deflated by Jimmy Carter's grandson.

(13,776 posts)Although, to be fair, Bush Sr. does a lot of stuff with Clinton, doesn't he? Or did, anyway.
I love thinking of this as Carter's Revenge--although Jimmy is so sweet he would just turn the other cheek. Good thing his grandson didn't let Romney get away with those statements!

(58,724 posts)It's just when I think of the two of them, I think of the bitter rivalry and long-standing animosity between them.
craigmatic
(4,510 posts)To me it seemed like Teddy was upset at Carter for not being liberal enough even though he was pretty much our first green energy president, the last president to ask the American people to sacrifice, and he spoke openly about legalizing pot. I think alot of it was sour grapes on Teddy's part with him not really wanting to be president so much as him not wanting Carter to have the job either. I always wondered why Ted never ran in 1976 or 1984 when the field was more clear for him to win. The run in 1980 just seemed so spiteful to me. Then there was their convention awkwardness and Ted not wanting to shake hands. So I guess you can tell I sided more with Jimmy when it came to the whole situation.

(1,537 posts)I thought Carter did a great job as president, but he got sandbagged by the Republicans. Turns out that was possibly true in the literal sense... according to conservative historian Kevin Phillips the Bush/Reagan team told the Iranians not to release the hostages until after the election, and if so, the new administration would set them up with some sweet munitions deals.
Also, can you imagine where we would be now, if America had followed through on Carter's alternative energy plans? The entire world would have been buying that technology from us, all along!!!

(507 posts)Jimmy Carter's administration was the first one I finally saw that for the media it was always OK if you're a Republican. Contrasting how they treated him and Ronald Reagan it was indisputable and the pattern has just continued.
Jimmy Carter may not be promoted by a media machine in service to oligarchy and he might not have an ignorant claque of people who deify him but he is the greatest ex-president in the history of the country. I hope his grandson has as illustrious a career in journalism. He already has a major scoop to his credit.

(26,624 posts)of the Carter Administration. All the bad stuff was there: the ridiculous interest rates, the gas lines, the Iran hostage crisis, but when they got to the strong, sound, intelligent and humane policies of the administration, we thought those policies could have had a profound positive effect on our country. My husband said sadly "and to think, I voted for Reagan." I said, at least I didn't vote for Reagan, but was a reluctant vote for Carter.
