86
To remove, end usage, or take something out or away. Despite ALL other posts suggestion the origin of this phrase there is only one true answer:
Chumley's, a famous and OLD New York speakeasy, is located at 86 Bedford St. During Prohibition, an entrance through an interior adjoing courtyard was used, as it provided privacy and discretion for customers.
As was (and is) a New York tradition, the cops were on the payroll of the bar and would give a ring to the bar that they were coming for a raid. The bartender would then give the command "86 everybody!", which meant that everyone should hightail it out the 86 Bedford entrance because the cops were coming in through the courtyard door.

(42,285 posts)You can "86 that order" or be told that the bacon is "86ed"; you can also "86" a customer if he's being obnoxious....later, mob slang picked it up and if he was 86ed, he swam with the fishes....

(14,565 posts)The term would be heard multiple times every day.
Security guards would approach us in the sportsbook and ask about certain guys: "Does he ever bet? If not we're going to 86 him. All he does is sleep in the chair all day and freeload the cocktails."
When there was any type of altercation you'd see the security guards escorting the guy out. Then they'd return and say. "Don't let him back in here. We just 86ed him."
Another frequent one was when some gambler would win too often at a specific sportsbook, blackjack or craps table. He'd show up and say, "Can you believe this? I just got 86ed from the Tropicana. I beat them for 5 dimes last month and now they say they don't want my business."

(14,565 posts)All day long I was hearing 86ed, and I was baffled. This was when I lived in Los Angeles but would visit Las Vegas on weekends.
I was nervous to admit I didn't know the lingo so I never asked anyone. Then one afternoon I saw an argument at Gary Austin's (ill fated) sportsbook on the Strip. The guy who caused the problem was booted out by security and by Gary Austin himself. Then the rest of the day I heard several people say Gary Austin 86ed a troublemaker. It finally clicked.

(14,923 posts)I zeroed in on the 45. Then I saw the date.
Then I remembered the '86ed' as a shorthand for tossing something out.
Well done whoever thought this up!
