I was at the gym this evening and they had Faux News on a couple of the TVs around the gym. The sound is always off, so I pretty much just ignored it. However, every so often I'd look over just to laugh at some of the propaganda. Here's what I saw just in the few minutes I glanced over tonight.
First, I saw that they were playing the Romney tape (with subtitles and everything), and below the tape was the headline, "Mitt Romney talks tough about America's entitlement culture." Kind of a different take on the story then say, oh I don't know, EVERY other news outlet and thinking person in the country. He's a tough guy who's going to go to the mat to battle this huge problem of America's "entitlement culture."
Then I saw that Herr Hannity was on. First he put up a graphic showing the "latest polling." It had Obama at 47% and Romney at 46%. Again, kind of a different poll than you'd find on ANY OTHER credible news source.
Finally, and this is the one that made me laugh out loud, Hannity puts up this graphic saying that 47% of Americans do, in fact, receive some sort of "government handout." And those words, "government handout" were actually used on the graphic. That graphic was quickly followed by one saying that, "More Americans than EVER are on food stamps," and showed the number 46.5 million.
It was at this point that I started to do some basic math in my head. We live in a country of roughly half a billion people. Even if we upped the percentage to 50%, that would mean 250 MILLION people were on some form of welfare. Now compare to the 46.5 million number from the next graphic. Kind of different numbers, aren't they? Now, I know that food stamps and "government handouts" are two different things, but wouldn't it stand to reason that if you're getting a "government handout" because you're lazy and unemployed (as right-wingers like to think), you're ALSO getting food stamps? So one would THINK that those two numbers would probably be pretty close to each other, not one FIVE TIMES larger than the other.
Do the people at Faux News just not think that we're smart enough to do some basic math and critical thinking, and able to come to the simple conclusion that they're LYING to us? Wait, what am I saying? The people who watch Faux News AREN'T smart enough to do basic math and REFUSE to do any critical thinking. That's why they watch Faux News in the first place.
