If you think I will give up this state to Republicans, you are dreaming. I realize that many in this state live in the 1950's, but some of us that got transplanted here are liberal to the core and will never give up the fight.
I might be liberal in a Red State, but I'm still liberal.
Every vote counts.

(39,961 posts)and I'm at the point where Romney makes me so mad that I say "Bring it on". I wish my state could turn the tide for Obama, because I am fed up with Romney. Mississippi COULD turn the tide, if we got off of our behinds and stopped all this "Well, it has to go for Republicans" nonsense.

(23,156 posts)fifty wonderful states. I've at least been through all but about five our our states, and each one has something to offer.
Now, there are some that you couldn't pay me to live in, but that's just me.
Back in the early 80's my sister lived in Hattiesburg, MS, and I got to visit her several times. I was struck with awe at how lovely a state it is. Do you still have the water parks? They were wonderful.
Aerows

(50 posts)I'm pretty sure we are right up there with you, sadly. I really didn't realize how bad it still was until the last several years, when the racist comments started flying about our Muslim president from Kenya. My son, who just graduated from high school in May, is both biracial and gay, and he had very few problems, so that is encouraging. The youth shall lead us!

(5,810 posts)I cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter in Gautier, MS (along the Gulf Coast). My son and his family still live there. So I know Mississippi and how RED it can be. But there are good Democrats there and it's easy to feel isolated when so many around you spew the Republican talking points.
I think after Romney's screw ups of late, maybe some of those who are glowing RED will start to fade out to Pinkish and then go BLUE. We can hope, can't we? The bloom is definitely off the rose for some of Romney's fans so with a steady drum beat from the media explaining WHO he was talking about, maybe they will GET IT that he was talking about them. It will be a bitter pill for them to swallow since they thought he LUVED them. When they get over their shock at how they've been insulted, maybe they will just stay home and lick their wounds on Nov. 6th. Best case scenario they would vote for Obama, but I'm not holding my breath. Just staying away from the polls on election day will be enough for me.
By the way, I live in a VERY RED part of NW Florida, so I know what it's like to be a liberal/Progressive in an Ultra Conservative land. It's not always fun but it sure keeps me on my toes.
Good luck in Mississippi and never ever give up the fight!

(675 posts)It can get a little discouraging at times. I will admit that I have not put any signs up this year. In 2008 I probably had 50+ signs in my yard on election day. Unfortunately I have heard second-hand what some of my neighbors have said about my family and our display of our political views. As a result I don't feel comfortable displaying them this year. I'm also better about judging when a remark in response to some stupid right-wing nonsense I hear in my vicinity is worth delivering or not than I used to be. Still it does not shake my resolve and I will be at my polling place on election day to cast my ballot for the President as well as a true progressive running for the 5th congressional district, Charlie L. Holley. We do have great support in this state from our fellow progressives on leftinalabama.com.

(633 posts)Also a transplant. Lived my entire life in very liberal (pre-2000) Southeast Florida & moved here 12 years ago. I can DEFINITELY understand your frustration!! I live in the extreme northwest corner though, about 1 mile from Memphis, TN. I still have a very hard time dealing with the culture shock, not to mention the weather!!!
I did something a little crazy before the 2008 election, I spent about a month in south Florida on my own dime & worked for the Obama election campaign. I wasn't here to vote, but I personally saw to it that many, many people and absentee ballots counted in Palm Beach County, FL. I just figured that would do more good, but I won't be able to do that this year.... So I'll be at the polls!!

We did it in Mississippi by a 58% margin rejecting personhood crap on the ballot. We went to the polls in droves to defeat that. I know, I went with my mom and my neighbor the second they opened, and both of them are conservative, but they are intelligent women that knew the ramifications.

"One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.
Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, "I'm saving these starfish, Sir".
The old man chuckled aloud, "Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?"
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, "It made a difference to that one!"

(5,810 posts)Is that there are so many of the 47% ers in Mississippi and Alabama ..and in NW Florida where I live. If some of the die hard Romney supporters who belong to the 47 % would just listen to what he said about them, they would not be caught dead voting for that slime ball. He has essentially written them off, insulted them and made it perfectly plain that he has no respect nor sympathy for them or their plight.
My husband volunteers at our local food bank. He helps fill bags with food that is given away each day. They are running pretty short on food these days because the need is so great plus they lost some of their stock when we had a deluge earlier this summer and their warehouse got flooded. They will start getting more as it gets closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas and people get the warm fuzzies and start donating again.
The people who get the food get enough food to last one week (when they have enough) and trust me it's not steaks and chops. It is ramen noodles, canned corn, applesauce, bag of rice, box of cereal. Peanut butter if they're lucky. Canned soup. They are screened and get this ration of food one time in a quarter. When Wal-Mart or other groceries have bread and things like bagged salads, they get that, too. Oh, and after holidays they get lots of candy to toss in the bag. So AFTER Easter, they might get a chocolate bunny or jelly beans.
One of my husband's friends had the nerve to ask if they got steaks and chops and sneered when he asked. Believe me, my husband set him straight and explained that these people are getting subsistence food. And God only knows what they eat when that runs out.
Romney needs to go mix and mingle with some of the folks that show up at the Food Bank. He needs to walk a mile in their shoes. He has no idea. And neither does that sidekick of his. Maybe if they had to live like the clients at the Food Bank do for a month or so, they might GET IT.
We have to keep talking to the 47% who watch FOX and somehow miss out on this story of Mitt and what he really thinks of them. They will have to hear the sad truth that their man really despises them and wouldn't help them if his life depended on it.
Aerows
