There are government expenditures I can get very angry about -- war, for instance -- but caring for the lesser among us? NO.

Let's make sure wrongney does NOT get anywhere NEAR the White House, except maybe for one of those White House tours.
Now get to work. We have a President to RE-elect!

(1,151 posts)Like when the person in front of me at the grocery store is buying WAY better food than me. And when their EBT card runs out they pull out a big wad of cash and rip off a $100. I tell myself this person is an exception and many more people are being helped. But I wish the Democrats would start bitching about this and do something about it instead of hearing Republicans saying the entire program needs to go.

(81,238 posts)everybody else's birth control pills. You know, the kind of people his lordship mittster of wrongney dismisses as "lazy moochers." I told her that wouldn't matter because I, for one, would be THRILLED to help pay for poor women's access to contraceptives. And I put it to her - "seems like a much better bargain to me - a few bucks a month in taxes going toward preventing unwanted pregnancies, OR would you rather have to pay many many more dollars a month in taxes for the care and feeding and other support for all those unwanted children who start flooding the system because their moms couldn't get access to affordable birth control or other family planning services?"
Oh. (Moment of silence followed.)
Well, uh, hmm, she kinda mutteringly admitted that she, um, hadn't thought of it that way.
Then she conceded that I had a good point. She's also edging back around from viewing me as a "baby killer" because I believe in a woman's right to have the last word over what happens to HER body. She actually admitted that she doesn't want to see Roe V Wade overturned!

(7 posts)I bet if you added up the amount of money paid to "scammers" as you call them it wouldn't amount to a fraction of the tax dollars KBR, the DOD and the oil companies piss away in a week. Are there folks gaming the system, yep, and it sucks. Does that mean everyone on food stamps and welfare are losers, unwilling to take responsibility for themselves? Nope, most are single parents who made a bad choice, or a bunch of them. I'm willing to slip some of my money to them in hopes their kids get a decent meal, in hope they do well in school and make better choices.
As far as their health insurance, I'd rather get them to go to regular Dr visits so they don't overload the ER Rooms with minor issues.

I do not resent my tax money going to help people who need a little help. If people have been on welfare all their life, then yes I resent that but I put the blame for that on gov depts that aren't properly doing their jobs. I just don't understand how they can't stop that kind of thing.

(812 posts)and it is not pretty.
I married my High School sweet heart away from her abusive,meth-addicted husband.
Starting out,the only work that I could find was minimum wage and for a family of five this meant getting assistance.
We did not live high on the hog and the monthly interviews and scrutiny of our finances was humiliating.
But my children grew up healthy and today have children of their own and they pay taxes.
Thank You to everyone who proudly paid their taxes, with out your help then i would never have been able to eventually find a decent job to support my children, now i help others.
I am proud to pay taxes and proud to be an american dad.

Our First Lady was right when she talked about not slamming the door of opportunity behind you.
Encouraging people to get trained in a vocation or helping them go to college shouldn't be controversial.
And Medicare and Social Security represent the best of America. I'm eager to get to 2014 when access to health care for everyone will finally be a reality.

(8,380 posts)Growing up, we were lower middle class. We didn't have a lot of extras, but we sure did have enough to have a home, food, some clothes, and we went on a little vacation to New Hampshire almost every summer. We never needed any assistance until my senior year of high school, when my father lost his job because some jackass who worked at his bank stole money. My dad was humiliated to be out of work, but got unemployment and eventually got another, better job. That's the extent of help that we needed.
As I've aged, my husband and I are aware daily how fortunate we are - we work hard at good jobs, have health insurance, money in the bank for now and for retirement, every need we have is met, and practically every want is as well, or will be in time.
There are many others around us who are in the same situation we are in who bitch and moan about "all those people who never work and get money" and the "people with cell phones, tattoos, and fake nails driving a Mercedes" who are on public assistance. My usual answer to the whine is, "First of all, how much is enough for you? Don't you realize how fortunate YOU are? Secondly, even if we had nine cheats out of ten people receiving assistance, I can live with that, because that one family left truly needs help."
Honestly, how much is enough?

(10,715 posts)where our second kid was born and we were pretty broke, and we got food assistance for awhile. Towards the end of that time I got a good raise and we settled some money problems; then I got a notice from the state that we had actually not been eligible for assistance for the previous 6 months, and would have to repay close to $3000.
Well, it wasn't good news, and I thought there was a good case to fight it, but considering that the money would go back into the program, and that our circumstances were improved enough to manage, I spent the next year paying the money back. No complaints, and sending the last check in felt very good.

(6,169 posts)My family needed some help once when I was a kid and my mother was trying to raise a family on minimum wage. (53,661 posts)Paying your taxes is the least a person can do to help others. If one has a chance to help someone that they meet personally, it's a pleasure.
How many times does that happen? What about those we've never met? Should they do without because we can't see them?
We know their needs still exist, and who knows, we might be one of them one day. Nothing to be resentful about. We are all equal, we all need help at one time or another.

(27,985 posts)I would pay more. But then I'm a socialist, I'm kind of hard wired to believe that the community is more important or at least as important as me.
Within our family unit (4 of us - polyamorous) we practice monetary socialism. Once I step outside into the real world, my job is compensated much higher than the other two who work equally as hard. One of our members is on disability but he takes so much care of our child and our house that he works as hard as any of us. We all place our money in a community pot and we each take a stipend. An identical stipend, because when we cross the threshold back into our home, we are equals.
I wish I could see a way that democratic socialism could actually work on a larger, even global basis.
So, I guess that makes me pretty darn left, eh?

(48,217 posts)Our foreign policy is arrogant and stupid, especially with respect to the Middle East, and the blowback can be terrible.
Sometimes our attitude toward so-called "terrorists" reminds me of the attitude of Japanese right-wingers, who take the very real suffering of Japanese civilians during World War II as their starting point but act as the world suddenly decided to beat up on Japan for no reason.
There's a history to all these protests, and most Americans don't know this history, just as they didn't know why Iranians were angry at the U.S. in 1979 or why the Soviets went into Afghanistan.
