(33,643 posts)Gilmour's solo in that song is probably the best part of that entire album.
Also, The Gunners Dream, 2 Suns in the Sunset, and Southampton Dock are pretty solid tunes. Most of the rest is ... okay.
35 years after (!) I listened to it a bunch (when it came out) ... I still know almost every word to every song on that album. That's how much I played it when it came out lol ...
Trump should be at the FMH right now, honestly.

(21,108 posts)I am like that with Amused to Death. One of my favorite albums of all time AND still relative today. Watching TV is especially meaningful atm.

(33,643 posts)I got it when I came out and I think I listened to it once and then sold it to the used record store a month later.
I remember it being really long, really heavy-handed and preachy, and virtually devoid of anything resembling 'hooks'.
Maybe I'd have a different perspective nowadays. And maybe it takes more than 1 listen to appreciate. Certainly wouldn't be the first time
Hell I thought R.E.M. Murmur was 'okay' the first time I heard it. About 1000 spins later it's one of my all-time favorites.

(21,108 posts)And there is a theme. And he takes on some heavy subjects...all with some of the very best musicians in the business.
Amused to Death
We watched the tragedy unfold
We did as we were told, bought and sold
It was the greatest show on Earth
But then it was over
We oohed and ahhed
We drove our racing cars
We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen eyed lookout spied a flickering light
(Our last hurrah)
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Grouped 'round the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their list
And then
The alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason for our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death

(33,643 posts)I think it gets unfairly slagged, so in that sense, it's underrated. Overall, I think it's good, doesn't quite reach great. It needed WAY more David Gilmour. Gilmour on lead vocal on only 1/2 a song on a whole album ... is not enough
If it were Rogers Water's solo (which it practically is) I would hold it in higher regard because the competition is much less stiff ...
There's 4 tunes I think are damn good, including TFMH, and the other 3 I mentioned. The rest is solid but unspectacular.
But when it came out was I was a 17 yo stoner, and TOTALLY into PF?
Sheeeeit. I friggin loved it!
Ferrets are Cool
(21,108 posts)preachy lyrics. They wanted to do something else, something lighter, but Roger, being Roger, insisted....which of course, resulted in the eventual breakup.
That, in turn, led to The Division Bell
As you look around this room tonight
Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears?
What do you want?
(What do you want from me?)
Should I sing until I can't sing anymore?
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
You're so hard to please
What do you want from me?

(33,643 posts)I'm pretty familiar w/how stuff went down there in the end
Honestly out of all the post-breakup work ... and I've heard it all ... There are songs I like here and there for sure, but it's like ... the sum was greater than the parts, man. Same w/Zep, the Beatles, every great band really lol.
Sorrow on MLOR is my favorite single tune ... like that's a legit Floyd-quality tune ... and that is for sure my favorite album overall, by a considerable margin.
AFA just an album side goes ... I can still totally groove to side 1 of About Face, just spun it on Vinyl the other day. Pretty good set of 5 tunes, I gotta say.
And even though it's a bit ... let's call it ... 80's-produced (and a really hokey concept), there's some solid stuff on Radio KAOS. The Live Aid song is awesome as is Who Needs Information and a few others.
Those 3 records are the only one's I still listen to w/any frequency.
Ferrets are Cool
(21,108 posts)solo work. I can only imagine how good it would have been as a PF album.

(33,643 posts)I saw Roger on Radio KAOS tour actually ... good show .. he never took off his sunglasses the whole time.

(3,809 posts)And they can appear to themselves every day
On closed circuit T.V.
To make sure they're still real.
It's the only connection they feel.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Reagan and Haig,
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher, and Paisly,
"Hello Maggie!"
Mr. Brezhnev and party.
"Who's the bald chap?"
The ghost of McCarthy,
The memories of Nixon.
"Good-bye!"
