If you insert the "ein," it tends to refer to something popular that the city is known for.

Ich bin Frankfurter: I am from Frankfurt
Ich bin ein Frankfurter: I am a cooked sausage

Ich bin Hamburger: I am from Hamburg
Ich bin ein Hamburger: I am a grilled patty of ground beef

Ich bin Berliner: I am from Berlin
Ich bin ein Berliner: I am a jelly-filled donut

And in case you are from France's capital city, trying out your German in Germany...............

Ich bin Pariser: I am from Paris
Ich bin ein Pariser: I am a condom.
