When first released this song seemed powerful. Then it became a naive look at the world (to me). (Original Post) Dyedinthewoolliberal Jul 2020 OP

the United States was teetering ...Vietnam, Mississippi Freedom Rider murders, MLK and Bobby Kennedy both assassinated, Kent State, the University of Texas Tower Sniper, Nixon..and we took to the streets in protest...we were young and so damn sure we could make a change, and we did, sort of..Dylan's song, an anthem for that time....when the BLM reached their breaking point and said enough is enough and took to the streets in protest we the people stopped being nice...and it was about damn time.....we're done with racial, ethnic and gender hatred..we're done with Mitch, Susan and their "concern"..we're done with republican depraved indifference and the fire they started..we're done with babies in cages, Russian interference, and the loss of nearly 150,000 innocent lives to a pandemic they ignored...we're finished with being told who we can love...we want them out of our wombs...we've had it with stupidity and governance by playground taunts and revenge....we want science and reason and adult conversation...we want Trump, his reptilian spawn and his nazi followers gone...we want our country and respect back...

The song assumes all change is good. His worldview became more fully realized as he got older and his lyrics become more ironic.

By the 70's he had left these songs behind, even though they are still part of his legacy.
