Cruise ship with 1,200 guests sets sail for the first time since industry shutdown

The (first) ship has sailed.

A German vessel operated by travel giant TUI Cruises, is testing the cruise industry waters as it becomes the first large cruise ship to resume operations, following months of shutdowns amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to German public broadcaster DW, the Mein Schiff 2 (My Ship 2), set sail late Friday night from the northern city of Hamburg.

“Today it finally starts again,” the company wrote in an Instagram post ahead of the departure. “Mein Schiff 2 is ready and so are we.”

The ship sailed toward Norway for a three-night scenic cruise in the North Sea. Without stopping at any other ports, it’s scheduled to return to Germany on Monday morning.

The German news agency DPA reported that the massive ship, which usually has a capacity of 2,900 travelers, is carrying 1,200 guests.

The company said that 1,740 people (or 60% of capacity) would be allowed to travel, but the quota wasn’t met.

At least they said the capacity quota wasn't met. Maybe it won't be a death sentence for all those people. I would love to go on a cruise, but not right now. Covid kind of makes me want to stick here at the house alone.

Legionnaires disease, noroviruses.... I realize it’s probably safe most of the time, but it sure seems risky to me.

Ten crew members on German-based ships slated to begin cruises in August have tested positive for COVID-19.

The AIDA-brand cruise ships are owned by Miami-based Carnival Corporation.

The crew members had recently flown to Germany from their home countries in Asia to begin working on the ships, local media reported. After testing negative in their home countries, they then tested negative again in Germany. Shortly after boarding the ships, docked in Rostock, Germany, they tested positive.

On Wednesday, the company flew 750 workers from the Philippines and Indonesia to Rostock to join the ships before the cruises begin, according to local media. Ten crew members on the AIDAmar and AIDAblu ships tested positive. The ill crew members are isolated in individual cabins and will be tested again, along with all other recently arrived crew members, Frizzell said.
