General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI watched yesterday on a highlight clip of a NASCAR race that showed
the #43 Bubba Wallace crashing into the wall along with others. I then made the mistake of reading comments. If you think there is not a racial problem in this country take a quick look at them.

(9,983 posts)"Sports fans", in particular, are dreadful for trash-talking EVERYTHING. My BIL can clear out his housemates in about 5 minutes, anytime the Red Sox are on! All the players are stupid and incompetent, the officals are crooked, and he's yelling at the TV.....

(7,505 posts)They would have done something. I believe it was Michael McDowell car 34 that turned down into him. It looked bad but I'm betting he had a good excuse. Bubba has brought not just eyes but black people with money as sponsors. Those cars are probably 200 grand apiece. I don't think McDowell would throw his away. Something that does happen though is sending a message about how other drivers race you. Race car drivers have long memories. Bubba has had some shit luck, and Petty is a step behind. And yes some blame him for the flags being banned. And some blame him for being black. I have watched the young drivers interact with him before the covid rules. They love him and consider him a friend.

(7,505 posts)I'm old enough to remember and witness the kindness of other NASCAR teams to Wendell Scott. He traveled with mostly just his family as pit crew. He even got out of the car at times to change tires. I witnessed other teams bring their used tires to his pit. Also when he pitted under green other pit crews came to help. Do I believe there are racists in NASCAR yeah. Probably no more than in America in general. I would say even less. But I'm an optimist.

(58,785 posts)not coincidentally over 70% of white Americans polled do also. This is the overwhelming majority who've empowered the great advances in equality we're all been part of during our lives, right up to today.
Of course that leaves the faction of racist reactionaries whose hair is on permanent fire as a result, Kacekwl. Anyone can unfortunately always find racist scum by trolling for them.
But right now, we're heading into a very dangerous stretch of enormous national and planetary battles for power.
So we need to watch out for the Republican, Russian, Iranian and Chinese agitprop campaigns attempting to sabotage our belief in goodness and hope for the future. They need to be met with a huge national refusal to be mined for weakness of conviction.

(7,017 posts)I always hear republicans say there isn't a racial problem in America. I think it's greater than 30% though.

(58,785 posts)And then there's just...looking around. Hasn't it ever occurred to you to wonder how political observers could easily come up with more than a half dozen highly qualified black women to be potential Vice Presidents of the United States. !!!!!
The point is, they're targeting all of us, but especially those whose profiles show vulnerability. Being informed is the way to avoid further mind-fucking by Putin's saboteurs.
