I sat there transfixed to the small screen in my shaking hand, scrolling quickly to find something to get me unstuck and jump-start my optimism enough to propel me into the daybut I was met with packed pools of virus-deniers, old friends broadcasting their racism, born-again Karens preaching hatred in Jesus name, and slurs of black NASCAR drivers by extended family members....
(But) this is my home, its the place Ive lived for half a century and poured my life and my gifts and my heart into, and Id really rather not uproot my family and leave my friends and flee to places that feel less violent and less cruel and more welcomingbecause thats what were supposed to be...
The racists are growing desperate. I think their violence is going to get worse. I think they feel the headwinds of History blowing fiercely against them and they are going to make one more frantic, brutal, ugly assault on diversity and decencyand well have to be here to be the line that will not be moved...
Yes, Im done.
Im done with this Americaand Im ready to fight for a better one.

(236 posts)Long time lurker, second time poster. I guess I was a bit trigger happy on the post because the writing resonated so much with me, and I feel ready to start contributing a bit.

(3,122 posts)Ive done it. It works.
Ive stopped posting on Facebook or Twitter (or scrolling thru others posts). Im back to reading again newspapers, magazines, books; both fiction and non- fiction.
Im also volunteering for key campaigns in my state, plus of course Joe Biden.
Its much less stressful and it just might, you know, help save our democracy.

(1,639 posts)are particularly aggressive. I have used this metaphor to describe the racists in this country before.
I don't claim to know why wasps become so agitated with the waning days of summer. It's only my imagination that plays with the idea that they know that their time on earth is limited, so they sting while they can no matter how high the cost.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,370 posts)It is going to get a LOT WORSE before it gets better.
Electing Obama twice showed us what we can aspire to, but since politics is a pendulum, many on the other side were SERIOUSLY pissed it was pushed that far, and they SHOVED as hard as they could the other way.
What is interesting in hindsight is that shove was actually pretty weak, and the most vocal of Trumpy's defenders are truly a small minority.
The middle of the road electorate, which is a significant number of Americans, I feel has had just about enough of this bullshit, and will make the necessary changes. But the lesson was learned, I think.
Shoving that pendulum too hard in the future can get us another Trumpy.
Or worse, a Pence clone.
We just need more and more women in state houses and national positions.
