https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/07/28/europe/russia-coronavirus-vaccine-approval-intl/index.htmlRussia intends to be the first in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine, in less than two weeks -- despite concerns about its safety, effectiveness and over whether the country has cut essential corners in development, CNN has learned.
Russian officials told CNN they are working toward a date of August 10 or earlier for approval of the vaccine, which has been created by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Institute.

Give Russia credit for nothing.

(32,733 posts)its long-term effects, so how the hell is a vaccine being made with so little understanding of what we're dealing with? In other words, I'm with you. I don't really see a long line of people signing up for this. I bet the trump family will be among the first to take it, and I'm ok with that.

(25,902 posts)that an actual effective and safe vaccine can possibly be ready this soon.
I, for one, am going to be very slow at getting vaccinated, long after most people have. For one thing, I live alone, I'm retired, I can continue to have minimal contact with others.
For another, once a genuinely good, safe, effective vaccine is available, there are a lot of others who need to be ahead of me in line to get it.

(16,646 posts)If and when a vaccine becomes "available", the general public will be some of the last to receive it. That could be months upwards of a year. Medical staff, first responders, nursing homes, teachers, etc. will be way up the list. Retirees with little or no conditions will be some of the last. Unfortunately, that's me.

(25,902 posts)millions of doses that will be needed.
Nonetheless, I want to know that it's been properly tested and proven effective.
Someone recently said, and it may have been Dr. Fauci, that he'd be happy with one that's 60% effective. Which isn't highly reassuring.
Just like we really have no good idea just how accurate any of the tests for Covid-19 really are. There seem to be a lot of both false negatives and false positives.

(25,902 posts)There are any number of different potential vaccines being tested, and rushing any of them to market without them being demonstrably safe and effective is a potential disaster in the making.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who still remembers the Swine Flu Vaccine fiasco.

(6,414 posts)But production has already begun for many of the vaccines. We could have 300 million doses ready to go by the time one gets approved.
Its not going to take a year.

(16,646 posts)There is a very good case to be made that multiple doses will be needed. Furthermore, at some point, we'll have to "share" doses with the world. And strangely, although they've already begun, they have to produce literally billions syringes and small bottles in which to deliver it. They can't produce enough tests, much less test them, right now. Vaccines won't be all that much easier.
DrToast
(6,414 posts)Well, theyre not trying to produce enough tests, so that might not be the best comparison.

(6,401 posts)Europe, USA, Canada, etc. all decide what is an acceptable risk on new medications for releasing them to the public. We used to be even more risk adverse than Europe...but eventually moved our standards to meet there's.
Russia on the other hand, has always taken more risk and not just pharmaceuticals. Some times it works out great...other times, not so much.
