US Open to be played without spectators at Winged Foot in September
Last updated 4 hours ago

The rescheduled US Open on Winged Foot's West course in September will be played without spectators.

The major was moved in April from its original 18-21 June slot and qualifying events were cancelled in June.

USGA chief executive Mike Davis said: "Following months of consultation and scenario planning with local and state health officials, we have jointly decided that hosting the US Open without spectators will provide the best opportunity to conduct the championship safely for all involved."

He's the guy who contradicted himself right and left during the long putter debate, before finally conceding he simply didn't like the looks of it

Think of all the "roadies" who would have been in the area for weeks setting up the pavilions, skyboxes et al.

And the concessionaires. Everything from the tournament merchandise tents to the beer and food vendors to the vehicle rental companies and transport services.

And the volunteers who weren't from the NYC area, and probably already paid for travel, their volunteer uniforms, their sleeping spaces (THAT might be recoverable), etc.

AND the spectators who would have packed hotels and motels almost halfway to Boston and Philly.

That is scheduled for the same time frame. Churchill Downs insisted a month ago they would allow some spectators. We'll see how that holds up

On July 5, KY had a positivity of 3.1.
Yesterday, it was 8.3.
And they haven't tested 15,000 in a day for a couple months.
Too many people there ignoring the governor's advice.
