It seems like we are doing everything right, everybody wears masks and few people complain, and yet our numbers are going up.

(11,292 posts)Closing down helped a lot. People need to stay put but it is hard to stay inside in beautiful California. But we did it so there is that.

(10,162 posts)In my town south of San Francisco masks are mandatory in stores and other public places, and I'm glad to say most - if not all - people wear them and keep their distance. I'm seeing a lot more people in our small neighborhood part, and only about half of them wear masks there - but they do tend to keep far apart in small family groups. Kids and teenagers tend not to wear masks.
Southern California - and Orange County in particular - is a different story from what I read, and that's driving the numbers up.

(4,673 posts)but that says nothing about tourists at the beach coming from inland and other places which could explain our numbers ticking up. That, and opening a bit too soon. Our largest group of positives is agricultural workers and they're working on protecting that vulnerable population.

(1,997 posts)California gets lots of press for having the most cases, but if you look at the CDC data per 100,000 population, we are actually number 24. We're still going up, which is worrisome, but this puts it in better perspective.

Down in Southern California at beaches, a lot of crowds were ignoring social distance rules
Imperial Valley farm workers were not being monitored, and it is a major hot zone in the state
Non infected People were put into infected prisons, and got infected
Newsom started things off right, and then got complacent, and now we are in trouble
He realizes that and now has taken strong action, In person schools will not open, online classes statewide until the situation is under control
and has moved back the phases for the hotspot areas
Cuomo of NY made mistakes early, but learned the hard way, and now has things under control. I believe that is the process Newsom is going through now, unfortunately, human nature being what it is, and the mixed messages, and lack of PPE, testing resources, etc. at the federal level, will make all of this very difficult to get out of until trump is removed

I'm in the San Fernando Valley and I'd say 95% of people wear masks in public places.
When I'm taking my outside walk I'd say it's about 75% wearing them.

(512 posts)I live down the street from a speakeasy bar in San Francisco, where masks are forbidden and smoking cigs and weed is allowed. From the front street the bar appears closed, but the back alley is quite a different story. An SFPD Officer laughed at me when I brought it to his attention, mentioning that hes aware and is quite a fan and frequent patron. More and more of these Im hearing are popping up around the Bay.

askance at everyone now, just in case I come upon a horny demon, or worse still, two of them making out.

(3,487 posts)the other entity that is present is a demon, and thus you are having sex with a demon even though you think you're alone in your room cuz your wife went to the mall.

And most young people don't socially distant at all.
Yes, most people follow the rules when it comes to wearing a mask if you go into a business.
But it's the other times. Maybe after summer is over things might improve.

don't know they're positive, then come down with the flu.
Like being at the Science Fair and watching a real life experiment.
I bet COVID will just LOVE coming across an already compromised immune system. FESTIVE!

(34,102 posts)It's more like an ocean liner. Once you get that much momemtum (quantity of cases) it's harder to turn around. That's why the flatten the curve worked much better when cases were just starting to grow.

(31,261 posts)Once the virus has spread everywhere, getting it under control is very difficult, even when the right things are done.
I read that it would take 95% of people in hot spots wearing masks properly at all times when around anyone not from their household to bring a hot spot under control in a few weeks.
Discipline is poor among people. For example, my next youngest brother has a tendency to treat me like a member of his household, I am not, as far as SARS-COV-2 is concerned, I should be viewed as a complete stranger each time we meet. I always wear a mask, he wears one sometimes in my presence.

(34,102 posts)No students yet - but professors & staff will be back.
We did a dry run for teaching live and via WebEx (those at home rated the experience a 10; those physically present a 7).
But out of 10 people, one started without a mask and had to be told to put it on. One took it off by the end.
If we can't get 10 people, all but one of whom have JDs, to wear masks - how on earth are going to get hundreds of students to?
They also removed an appropriate number of chairs for social distancing, but left them in straight rows front-to-back of the room - so each of us was 6' from our side-to-side neighbors, but onyl about 4' from our front/back neighbors.
Needless to say we've got a few kinks to work out - and about 2 weeks to get faculty to comply so that we don't have to discipline our students for violations we are guilty of.

Wearing a mask to the supermarket won't stop that.
Even if there was a state-wide stay at home order with everything closed except food and medicine delivery the case numbers would still be going up as infected people spread it to their family members.
Once you reach critical mass, the only way to make the case numbers go down immediately is to quarantine anyone who tests positive away from their family.

(34,102 posts)Both the inertia of large numbers - AND - the inability to isolate family members from each other make it harder to turn the cruise ship around.

(21,910 posts)stores have signs that it is mandatory. So the stores are okay.
However, as an example, there's this little park I go to to walk sometimes. A few weeks ago everyone was masked except one woman with her 2 kids -- and she stood out.
I went there again 2 days ago and now maybe 50% of the people there WERE NOT masked. I left very quickly.
I don't have an explanation..... a lot of people believe that being outdoors you are less likely to catch or spread it.... that's all I can think of.

(10,916 posts)Most people here are very good about masks.
The beaches are admittedly an exception. Some of that is people thinking being outdoors is a free pass, some of it is tourists going to the beach without a clue.
Most people who live in LA don't go to the beach regularly.

(9,121 posts)It honestly feels like people got bored of the whole thing. At first, shopkeepers were strict about masks. Now I go to the corner shop and there's always a few people in there who don't care.
Yesterday, I was at the DMV. Guy comes out, walks along the entirety of the line, within a foot of every single person as he passed - no mask.
People are out picnicking and BBQing. Traffic has gone way up - people are not staying home anymore. Where I go running, clusters of people, no effort to avoid each other. The regional parks are filling up as if it were a normal summer again.
The social climate has definitely changed. During the first two months, people stayed home, avoided gathering with friends, were very religious about hand sanitizer and masks and six feet.
Yeah, that is gone for too many people. I don't know where you live. I'm in the Bay Area. Every day, I see people just doing the craziest shit imaginable. And it's getting harder to keep myself safe. I can't even go grocery shopping and feel secure. I feel like every fifteen seconds, I want to shout, "Get the fuck away from me!" at some oblivious idiot who feels the absolute need to stand right next to me.
After two months, Americans got bored. We had exactly two months in us. Which, hey, that's a pretty good attention span for us.

(31,261 posts)The top virus expert in that country seems to be a fanatic about opening up everything, he even said no masks or social distancing is necessary. Our experience here and in the rest of the world is vastly the opposite of what Swedish officials appear to be implying. What is seen in all the rest of the world outside of what Sweden claims is masks and social distancing have a large positive impact on virus transmission.
