Georgia: CDC reports of a huge superspreading event in 260 kids+adults from YMCA camp.

Wow. CDC reports of a huge superspreading event in 260 kids+adults from YMCA camp. ~1/2 children aged 6-10 positive. 44% aged 11-17 positive.

➡️#COVID19 SPREADS IN KIDS.

➡️WHY NO MASKS WEARING?

...oh wait @BrianKempGA blocked mask mandate rules.

2) Camp required a test <12 days before arriving & attempted "pods"

Masks required for staff but NOT campers

Clearly these measures not enough for control. And using the pods is akin to the cohorting that CDC suggested. This is likely not adequate.

1. I wonder how many came with the illness-- just one? Twenty?

That's a scary amount of penetration of the virus.

But it would be good to study-- were most of those infected rooming in cabins together, or did it spread also through outdoor activities, which would be scary as we all hope that outside is safer.

10. So the younger children are MORE infected, not less.

That's scary.

Instant and effective testing would make all the difference for kids to resume something akin to normal. Also if we all wore masks and stayed distant just long enough to get this under control...

It just breaks my heart that so many viciously stupid adults-- starting with Trump-- care so little about children they are actively working against the simple measures that would keep them safe and let them have their childhoods back.

As with the Justice and State Departments, Trump is turning the CDC into a political arm of his campaign.

Have they been sent home to spread it to their families?

4. A church camp in Texas I went to as a kid tried to do sessions this year.

There was a flurry of updates to their health and safety plan through all of May. At the end of June a notice went out that 3 campers who had been in the June 14-19 session had tested positive. They canceled camp for the next 2 weeks, hoping to start up again. Finally on July 10th they packed it in and canceled for the rest of the summer.

I can't believe anyone would ship their kids off to a week long overnight camp in this environment, but that's another story.

to get timely, data-based information that sometimes stays under the media radar.

Here's the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report you linked to, but at the actual CDC website, rather than in pdf format.

Brian Castrucci, CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, a Maryland nonprofit that assists public health agencies and a former epidemiologist in Georgia, said the report is a warning for local school districts and others about the potential for spread in congregant settings.

“This should show you how actively kids can transmit it,” he said. “If you have a low prevalence in your community, you can start to do things. If you have rampant and rapid community spread, then there is no opening school, there is no opening colleges. It is not going to work.” [snip]

Though people over 60 make up the largest cohorts of hospitalizations and deaths, a recent Emory University study said children and adults under 60 are much more likely than the elderly to spread the disease to others.

I am astonished that parents actually sent their kids to a sleep away camp, or any camp, under these circumstances. It boggles the mind.
