I know a number of you were upset with me for going.
Let me say again that my husband and I were extremely careful to stay isolated. We made one trip (masked, gloved, and socially distanced) to a local grocery store, and then spent the rest of the time isolated in our condo, or on the condo's patio. We had no interactions with any locals or other tourists. We drove our own car there and back.
What surprised me, with my excellent view of Mission Beach from the condo, was that the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program was running the whole week we were there.
These were all local kids, dozens upon dozens of them, on Mission Beach, unmasked, no social distancing, yelling and screaming from 9am to 3pm every day.
Granted, this was outdoors, so reduced risk from that standpoint, but still.....
I think if San Diego is worried about their infection rate, wouldn't this be a concern?
So, again, I think my husband and I were the least of San Diego's concerns for that week.
So, flame away, I have my kevlar undies on!!

(27,195 posts)I love San Diego, and I always strive to be the best visitor possible while visiting.
Generally, we park our car and leave it parked the whole time.
We walk or bike everywhere. We scrupulously clean up after ourselves and recycle.
We also make it a point to patronize local businesses, although this time we had to cut way back, of course.

(12,682 posts)We have just been dealing with "visiting" in-laws who are anti-masker Trumpkin rentier types who had transplanted themselves to Yuma, along with a lot of their friends - pretty much all former locals who come into town visiting kids and grandkids complaining about how godless, stupid, and unpatriotic we are - as well as complaining about the high cost of living that they left those of us who stayed while they jacked up rents or housing cost flipping cheap houses and then fled because, well, they didn't want to pay taxes.
Again, I'm sorry.
Kids- they think they're immortal and it's summer; unless they've lost someone close, the Pandemic doesn't register.
But anyone over 17 should know better - grown ups should realize we are all in this together.
And I blame the talking heads and the "Church of Prosperity" for their pushing a selfish, exclusionary agenda over the past 40 years.
And tourist destinations tend to see double the amount of idiots; not only the local idiots, but visitors who act like they came on vacation to throw away all common sense and be free and have fun without any care.
Makes it difficult for smart tourists coming out for San Diego.
