PoliticoDonald Trumps campaign says it knocked on over 1 million doors in the past week alone.
Joe Bidens campaign says it knocked on zero.
The Republican and Democratic parties from the presidential candidates on down are taking polar opposite approaches to door-to-door canvassing this fall. The competing bets on the value of face-to-face campaigning during a pandemic has no modern precedent, making it a potential wild card in November, especially in close races.
Biden and the Democratic National Committee arent sending volunteers or staffers to talk with voters at home, and dont anticipate doing anything more than dropping off literature unless the crisis abates. The campaign and the Democratic National Committee think they can compensate for the lack of in-person canvassing with phone calls, texts, new forms of digital organizing, and virtual meet-ups with voters.

(10,905 posts)At first I was nervous, but our response rates on phone calls and texts are much higher and people are not necessarily wanting someone to go up to their door right now, said Jenn Ridder, Bidens national states director. You get to throw a lot of the rule book out the window and try out new things.
So... Democrats are doing great with phone calls instead of door knocks.
No disarray.

(68,618 posts)here in Ohio our numbers are rising...no GOP types out there either. I doubt any would answer doors...we will put literature on the doors with info about voting and who the party recommends etc. We are phone banking and more are answering their phones than usual also. We are calling to remind folks to ask for ballots...and that they can be dropped off etc. Also Early voting will start in October.

(12,394 posts)Unlike the article that makes it sound like they are organized busy little bees, and we are lazy slackers. I get multiple calls, texts and emails daily, and Ill bet in Harry Potter land there are owls sent in by way is chimney. I dont like the inference that we are doing nothing to boot out these psycho losers.

(68,618 posts)Also, GOP types are not out in Ohio so ...I would highly doubt the Trump campaign is telling the truth.

(8,383 posts)who was calling to see if I was voting for Joe Biden (of course I am). We chatted for awhile, and she said she had gotten some responses that people would NOT vote for Biden. I told her if she was calling my part of Virginia, that'd be normal, but that Virginia as a whole has a Democratic Governor, two Democratic Senators, and Democratic State Senate and House of Delegates.
So, there is work being done - it's just thankfully not someone showing up at my door.

(95,248 posts)Like its master, the Trump campaign lies. In particular, it exaggerates its deeds. One million is a nice round figure, a con-man's promise, the sort of thing a boaster says. There is no reason to take it as a genuine count of doorstep encounters with human beings. Doubtless there are some. Doubtless their canvasers are spreading viral poison among those who answer their doors and chat. As this takes its inevitable course, 'Trump campaign spreads plague' will become a subject for conversation....

The point of the article isn't that Trump is outplaying Biden, it's that the two campaigns have decided on drastically different strategies.

(95,248 posts)That belief is congenital. They want to look bigger, look better, look smarter. Actually being any of these things is beside the point. They believe them to be established truth if enough other people agree they are and believe.

In FL, we are doing phone banking instead of canvassing. A group of Democrats in my county make 500 or more calls every week encouraging VBM and supporting Joe.
Look at the # of Democrats in FL who have signed up for VBM - it is well past Republicans' tally. Why do you think Trump made his idiot claim yesterday that VBM in FL is peachy keen?
