From Portland mail carriers: an early warning about Trump's USPS machinations and the election

https://www.wweek.com/news/2020/08/05/postal-workers-say-wednesday-is-the-last-day-portlanders-can-mail-in-their-ballots-with-confidence-theyll-be-counted/

Vote-by-mail is an Oregon institution.

But letter carriers warn that the Post Office is now so mismanaged it cannot be trusted to promptly deliver mailed ballots to the elections office.

By Tess Riski | Published 6:21 AM Updated 6:21 AM

Excerpt:

"The allegation of mismanagement is part of a labor dispute by postal employees who object to new workplace rules. The postal workers union plans to picket Aug. 5 outside the Rose City Park neighborhood post office.

But unlike most such disputes, this one includes claims about the trustworthiness of Oregon elections.

If true, such incompetence undermines the integrity of Oregon's vote-by-mail system—one that state officials are defending against a barrage of disparagement from President Donald Trump.

The workers say that's no coincidence. They allege the mess comes from three Portland-area post offices testing out new directives issued last month by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Trump appointee.

Partridge says DeJoy's new program, called "Pivot for Our Future," has clogged up the mail system and jeopardized vote by mail nationwide. "The delay of the mail can impact our democracy," he says. "This has huge implications for the election this fall."

So far, not seeing any mail issues where I am. Still getting stuff within a few days of mailing.

I think we are fretting over what COULD happen, and we'd be better off concentrating on GOTV, contributing to our candidates, etc.

If you have been getting your mail on time...great. Here where I live in Michigan the Detroit distribution center is super screwed. Covid started it, De Joy made it worse, no new hires, no overtime...last time I heard they were operating with 25% Of staff. I’m way up north but anything with a 48...starting the zip code goes thru that Detroit P.O. Center.

This affects my drug delivery from the VA. Living in a very small town I know my postal carrier personally getting most info about P.O. from her, if she got any bluer she would make me look republican and I’m pretty progressive.

Example... a letter was mailed to me on July 10th from Jackson, Michigan...an in state mailing.
13 days later it arrived. This is not the first time. 195 miles away. I could have ridden my bicycle back and forth in less time. Well when I was younger, 😆.

vote, vote as early as possible, and if the mail is screwed up -- which I don't think it will be -- I'll vote in-person.

From what I understand, you can cast an early mail vote 45 days before the election. I don't think the mail will be delayed that long.

Here's a list of Drop Boxes -- there are lots of them -- if you are still concerned (check the list in September and October:

Someone should compile a run-down on the number of Trump appointments who have fucked up the purpose of our public service departments.

This reporter needs to find a new carreer. It's called the USPS. The article creates a lot of confusion between the various USPS unions. The National Association of Letter Carriers represents the permanent full time Letter Carriers. The American Postal workers Union represent the clerks and skilled trades like electronic technicians, mail processing equipment mechanics and building engineers. I can't tell a thing from this article. Are they shutting down the mail processing before they run ourt of mail? I don't know. We do know they are cutting latter carrier overtime. The public never sees the highly skilled people that it it takes to make their highly automated systems work. The Mail Processing Equipment Mechanics and Electronic Technicians actually run the automated sortation machinery. About the only thing that gets hand sorted are things that can't be run through machinery and those items that are not read by the machinery. Even the first class maiil is already cased and put in to street order by the flat sequencing sorter at larger centers. I would like to know if they are deliberately slowing down the mail, but I can't tell shit from this article. I will make some phone calls later today if I get time.

That’s just what we called it being lazy I guess but it was ubiquitous in the 60’s and 70’s where’s I lived, as in,”I’m going to the PO, got anything you need mailed”?

Whatever entity it was declared Trump was trying to shut down the USPS to eliminate mail in voting and they needed funds quickly or that just might happen.

IDK how I get these requests for money that are filling my email inbox but guess it’s because I donate to Democratic causes and candidates. This one just hit me the wrong way although what they claim is no doubt true.

Any such letter can document harm to Oregonians and be sent up to the constitutional appellate level no matter the ruling. IN TIME for the election. But it should be sent now.

There is a constitutional solution to this malfeasance and dereliction of duty. And the president's appointee can be MADE to run mail processing by the methods existing in the USPS before he arrived.

De Joy's justice delayed -- mail, which amounts to the federal offense of mail tampering -- is justice denied. And a threat to national security by tampering with a national election.

Meanwhile, since USPS is not under the DOJ, only De Joy himself, the People's House should also investigate De Joy, call him in and subpoena all internal memos.

This must be fought. Hard.

Lots of people get their prescription medications by mail. A delay in delivering those meds may mean having to go without vital meds for a few days. That’s dangerous. Other people have already complained about getting monthly bills so late, such as credit card bills, that they owed a late fee. I’m not sure of all the changes that DeJoy has implemented, but two seem to be no overtime and no waiting for a delivery truck that may be late (perhaps only by a few minutes) before postal carriers leave on their routes. That can have a big impact on first-class mail, and medications, especially as the volume of mail to be delivered snowballs.

Many of us receive bills and pay them electronically, but many older and poorer people without computers or Internet access do not. They relay on the mail.

DeJoy sounds like a real piece of work. Here’s an article describing his history and most likely how he plans to turn the postal service into a business, much of which would benefit him financially, by eliminating jobs and using robots. Rural post offices would most likely no longer have anything but machines and a couple of behind-the-scenes employees to oversee them only. Here are just a couple of paragraphs.

“His company has a terrible labor record, rife with red flags including sexual harassment, discrimination, speedup, workplace injuries, excessive use of temps, misclassifying workers as independent contractors, and inadequate sick leave during the current pandemic. ...

DeJoy’s New Breed Logistics (before it merged with XPO) was a contractor to the USPS for more than 25 years, “supplying the organization with logistics support for multiple processing facilities,” the USPS announcement revealed.

XPO Logistics does extensive business with the Postal Service ($57 million in 2017), potentially putting DeJoy in the position of overseeing decisions that affect his personal financial interests. He served terms as XPO’s CEO and board member before retiring in 2018; the company continues to rent warehouse space from him, and he and his wife own between $25 million and $50 million in XPO stock.“

yeah, on top of this ridiculous pension funding rule no other delivery service has to work under. It's grossly unfair and goes against the traditional postal mandate of anything, anywhere, anytime, whatever it takes.

In an email to WW, USPS spokesman Ernie Swanson said the postal service is committed to delivering mail in a timely manner, but said voters must use first-class mail or an "expedited level of service" when returning their ballots.

This is important stuff. I called my two Senators and Congressman just now to encourage them to formally investigate these charges by our postal workers.
