Georgia second grader tests positive for coronavirus after attending the first day of school

A Georgia second grader tested positive for Covid-19 after attending the first day of school, the school district told CNN.

Sixes Elementary in the Cherokee County School district began in-person classes on Monday. But by Tuesday, a classroom was temporarily closed for deep cleaning and the teacher and 20 other students had been asked to quarantine for two weeks after the second grader tested positive.

Parents and officials have debated whether it is safe to send students back into classrooms as virus cases have surged across the country. While health experts are still investigating how children spread the virus, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci has emphasized that schools need to include safety in their reopening plans.

Cherokee County recommends, but does not require, that children wear masks in school whenever social distancing is not possible, according to the school district's reopening plan. The district would only require students to wear masks if there was a statewide mandate in place. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has fought mayors' attempts to mandate mask use.

But, in my mind, one can address educational and social deficiencies if one must. One can never forgive the loss of a child that might have been preventable (nor the loss of a family member whose COVID-19 death may embed the child in guilt throughout his/her life).

Classes can be made up later; death is permanent. It's inhumane to put families through this.

the #s of significantly ill children will already be rising and the #s of schools closing soon after opening, or with parents demanding it.

pushing for schools to open NOW! I don't know if he was promised something or he's really just cozying up to DT because he's a Pub. I live in Ga. & long ago I decided to do what I thought was safe for me; the Governor be damned. As much as I missd going out to restaurants, I'm cooking everything at home. I'm retired so I don't have any real reason to go out, other than the occasional Dr. appt. & groceries. There are times I forget about the damn virus & when I have two appts. a few hours apart, I think, no prob, we can just stop for lunch or breakfast till the next appt. is due. THEN, the bulb goes on & I realize we can't do that.

The Governor was the first to open things up in this State, & our virus cases spiked. He OK'd summer camps to open & last week, after a few days they had to close because 200+ kids & many of the counselors became infected with the virus! He OK's schools to open, & you have stories like the one in this original post. We'll see how long they stay open.
