'Zombie cicadas': The mind-controlling fungus infecting insects like an STD

https://www.cnet.com/news/zombie-cicadas-the-mind-controlling-fungus-infecting-insects-like-an-std/

Get out your 2020 bingo card and check the box for zombie insects. Just when you thought murder hornets were the worst thing to give us nightmares this year, scientists have recently discovered a new cicada population infected by a parasitic fungus that controls their minds and forces them to infect other insects.

A fungus called Massospora infects the cicadas and ends up controlling the insects in an unusual way. The fungus has chemicals like the ones found in hallucinogenic mushrooms that can control the cicadas' behavior, according to a new study written by researchers from West Virginia University, published by PLOS Pathogens.

The way Massospora fungus spores attack cicadas sounds like a horror film. The spores eat away at the cicada's rear, abdomen, and even its genitals, where they deposit even more fungal spores for the cicada to transmit to other cicadas like an STD.

Then the cicadas body parts "wear away like an eraser on a pencil," study co-author Brian Lovett said in a statement on July 27.

and there was a rabbit chowing on the seed in my bird feeder.

Bird feeder is on an 8 foot shepherds pole in the middle of my yard, with a squirrel baffler attached about 4 feet up the pole.

I think he was as shocked as I was that he had somehow got up there. He jumped down and scurried away.

I've had squirrels, mice, rats, chipmunks and racoons climb up my bird feeder, but I've never seen a rabbit do it.

I just shook my head and said; "eff 2020".

My pear tree was loaded this year. In one day, every single pear was gone. Not even one on the top branches left.

No pieces on the ground. No broken branches. No scratch marks on the trunk.

This year is definitely bizarre. How the heck did a rabbit get up that pole? They don't even have pads on their feet.

I've seen rabbits scurry up a tree when my dog chased them, so I know they can climb trees.

Nearest tree is pretty far. Unless it's the Nadia Comaniche of rabbits, I don't think it could stick the landing on my cylinder bird feeder, and if so, I'd fill it with cherry tomatoes as a reward.

There is a small potted plant that is pretty close. Near as I can surmise, it may have been able to jump on the pot, then jump on top of the baffler and been able to grab the bottom of the feeder and pull itself up.

I'm going to sit out there quietly to see if I can catch it getting up there.

We had an extremely mild winter, and there's tiny black ants everywhere in the yard and running superhighways on the deck.

We've seen poor dragonflies that have been on their dying bed laying on the deck and within seconds, swarms of these black ants show up and just start having a feeding frenzy.

There are two, both over 30 years old.

One only had a few blooms this year. The other was loaded with almost ripe pears.

I was gonna try to make wine this year because of the bounty.

The crows, deer, rabbits, and squirrels must have come together in the heist...

The pipe is kept in my carport though.

I scoured the area for any broken branches, pear remnants, and animal or human prints. The only thing I found was a dead blue jay and a large squirrel nest in a tall oak nearby.

If it was a person, that's frightening as I am pretty rural and they would have to walk through dense blackberry thorns or come up the driveway a half mile...
