Hopefully the explanation is accepted...I think he is smart enough to know what is wrong to say and right...A slip, nothing more.
Joe is for the people...a more humane leader in the big house...imagine that..

(14,853 posts)Russia hacked into something like 3 billion Yahoo accounts a few years ago (sometime before the 2016 election).
Lots of people used Yahoo e-mail in the past, then switched years ago to Google and other options. So it wouldn't be surprising if many of those accounts had been forgotten by previous users.

(1,041 posts)I don't mean it as a diss on Joe at all, but the oppostion in this case is so spectacularly awful that most people inclined to vote for him at this point, would do so if he showed up for a rally drunk, in his pajamas and with a cat as his running mate.....
The people who are inclined to vote against him will find imaginary reasons for doing so anyway...
Which leaves that small % of swing voters whose mentality is largely incomprehensible - at least to me. Who knows what drives them...

(34,857 posts)it's all a lot are talking about. African Americans trended for a big chunk of the day yesterday and today black voters is trending.
Joe needs to be careful with what he says. I don't think it's a big gaffe but the problem is that he is not doing a lot of events, so, these gaffes stand out more since they're often what we hear when he's mentioned. I don't think it'd be a big deal in a normal campaign but if he's going to do only one major interview every two or three weeks, and essentially go radio silent between that, he can't have these gaffes or that's what everyone discusses when he's actually in the news. Then eventually, that's all anyone ever hears.
The interview was a tough one. I'll give props to Joe for doing it but he struggled at times during it and, as they did with Trump's last interview, the media is going to focus on the areas that highlight most his struggle. Hopefully he can work on that because right now, it's the buzz of Twitter and while Twitter isn't everything, I do think it's a good representation of what people are talking about.

(99,710 posts)Most of his gaffes are on race. That's why an African American running mate is a necessity !

(43,339 posts)Every single A-A pundit I saw on MSNBC and CNN (well over 10 or 15 by now) said it was a gaffe and most said he tends to make them on racial issues and (as you and Clyburn said), that is why he needs a black female running mate.

(46,703 posts)First generation Latin Americans can come from various different latin american countries in Central And South America. There is a tinge of pain sensitivity when we all get lumped into one one or two categories, assigned as Latinos or Mexican Americans, but we do our best to fall in place.
However, in that huge "diverse" group that Biden mentioned, we also have Latinos with strong African descent. And to complicate the issue, we also have other people with family origins that come from Europe. Argentina, for example. Very white.
So, the word "diverse" is subjective, especially when you have Black Americans who can claim the same connections to Latin America.
We are evidence of the melting pot.

(3,282 posts)they are raising a fuss that Biden basically said Black voters aren't as diverse as Hispanic voters?
What's not true about that? Black voters vote 9:1 Democrat over republican, Hispanic vote share relies much more on their geographic location in the country and the nation of origin of their closest non native relatives. Hispanics in Florida are much more republican than hispanics in Texas, for example.
Let's put a little punctuation on this.
The congressional black caucus has 55 members......55 democrats and 0 Republicans. That means either black Republicans don't want to associate with organizations focused on black issues or those organizations think the republicans are too out of step with their issues to let into the group.
That doesn't suggest diversity. it suggests that there are major overarching issues among the group that influence voting behavior. you know, something like institutional racism, the thing Republicans say doesn't exist.

which is one of the reasons there is more diversity among that group.
I don't see this as insulting. Black voters should be voting as a bloc. If not there's no chance of them ever getting fair representation.

(25,294 posts)It's a bit insulting to African Americans
Hispanics tend to be more socially diverse. It's like trying to court the Italian or Jewish vote. There tend to be alot of Republican Hispanics too. They're all over the place down here. South Texas. Cowboy and rancher types.

(50 posts)I am casting my very first vote ever this fall and it will be for the VP. Like a lot of other people who turned 18 in an election year, I am very excited and while VP Biden was not my primary choice, I am all in. But you and others need to stop acting as if really unfortunate stumbles that he makes can't be discussed. No one is saying he's a "rabid, spit-slinging racist." He said something foolish. He realizes that and clarified. It helps no one to act as if he did nothing wrong and people discussing it are being problematic.

(53,410 posts)Its an excellent year for first time voters.
But you probably havent been around long enough to get it that all those so-called gaffes are, as Joe Biden would say, just malarkey. The Republicans have been making this shit up for longer than youve been alive.
I would be a bit more circumspect in how I tell long time Democrats to act. Youre on a political sight for Democrats. Defending the Democratic nominee for President is expected here.

(50 posts)However, I'm a young black woman. I have stated this elsewhere when I've engaged with fellow DUers. So I'm not really just talking to wag my Gen Z finger at long time Democrats. It is a friendly warning. Many of my friends and family, along with other people in the black community across the diaspora, were upset with the Vice President's statements. This is the third or fourth time he has had to clarify something rather silly he has said about black people.
The Vice President needs to be more careful in how he states things, particularly in regard to race. He has a young black staffer who has a high-level position. Her name escapes me, but I saw her often on AM Joy. I wish she would take him more in hand.
So your point is noted, and it was not my intent to be a scold. But I also hope you equally understand how I as a black Gen Z woman will have very strong and possibly very different opinions about comments made about my racial and ethnic group than those who are do not share those characteristics with me.

(53,410 posts)He must have fooled all of us.
If every time he says something he has to prove he isnt a racist he might as well just drop the pretense hes kept up all his life AND especially as President Obamas Vice President.

(50 posts)In no way do my words suggest that, but because I am saying he said something silly about black people, you are jumping to this conclusion.
Just a thought: Black people are allowed to speak our minds when non-black people say something silly about us. That doesn't mean pistols at dawn. That doesn't mean we think the person is to the right of HP Lovecraft as far as racism. It just means we are speaking our minds about someone saying something silly about us.
No sarcasm tag needed.

(53,410 posts)You have every right to react the way you do, but to tell me Im not helpful because Im reacting to the lies and spin put out there by a Republicans and the media is a waste of both out times. The Republicans have been doing this since Ronald Reagan started running for President. Its old, very old underhanded methods to confuse the issue for young voters and their base.
In their determination to win they are quite willing to destroy their opponents. No lie is too putrid nor is any slur too despicable for them. They lie. They smear. They attack and they never stop.
If you allow them to influence you even a little they are thankless and they will use you and then empty your pockets and thwart you at every opportunity.
I have no patience for their tactics.
Having said that I want to apologize to you. I was needlessly harsh and wrong. I hope you accept my apology because I really am delighted that anyone your age is voting as a Democrat. And I also believe that your generation is going to save us from ourselves and youre going to save the planet too. Welcome to DU. Im proof that we can get pretty cantankerous during election years.

(50 posts)I think that for me, it is difficult to be taken seriously. I'm sure everyone felt that at 18, but not everyone had four years of Trump to contend with. Many people seem to think my generation is doing nothing but making Tiktoks, taking potshots at Millennials, and going on IG Live to overshare. I am absolutely serious when I say I feel life will be over if that Orange gherkin gets another term in the White House. I and others of my generation will have no future at all. That's why I am very concerned at setbacks. I know rationally not to worry about Kanye, etc, but I am so scared for what this country will be if Trump is reelected. So I just want the Vice President to stay the course and when he makes mistakes like this, it just frightens me, that's all. So much is at stake here. I know I'm preaching to the choir.
So, allow me to apologize to you. I am learning a great deal by being here, which is why I've tried to "Talk Less and Smile More" and absorb the wisdom from those Dems who have been doing this for a long time, but who also remember being my age and just hungry for change and a country to be proud of.
