Experts predict an increase in deaths across the region, made significantly worse by lawmakers who question the value of face coverings
Three months ago, the Republican governor of Missouri chose not to wear a mask in a shop, because he said he wasnt going to let the government tell him what to do. Mike Parson visited a hardware store to celebrate its reopening after he lifted Missouris coronavirus lockdown over the objections of health professionals and mayors of major cities.
Parson said the worst of the pandemic was past and the economic impact of the shutdown was worse than the virus. As for masks, the governor dismissively claimed there was a lot of information on both sides over whether to wear one so he wasnt going to require people to do so.
Three months later, Covid-19 is surging in Missouri and in many other parts of the midwest that imagined they had escaped the worst of the pandemic.
Health specialists predict a sharp increase in deaths across the region in the coming weeks that will be made significantly worse in some states by the politicians who followed Donald Trumps lead in undermining medical advice and in questioning the value of masks.
Anthony Fauci, the presidents lead coronavirus expert, recently warned the midwests political leaders to follow the science.

(25,270 posts)My understanding is that approx. 250,000 bikers showed up in Sturgis and that these bikers were from all over the U.S.. As this event breaks up and these bikers go back to their respective home states one could predict that we'll see a rise in cases, hospitalizations and deaths as a result.
Will we be able to track that increase? Who will be doing the tracking? Will it be apparent that this Sturgis event is responsible for any rise?

(21,802 posts)Our hospital is already full, we don't have the health care infrastructure to handle this, and in person school classes start today with optional masks.
But my neighbors tell me this is overblown, they "are done with it".

What's worse the pandemic or the rather casual and even contradictory approach to it? One thing leads to another. The more people equivocate and retreat into denial the worse this will get and exponential growth is what we appear to have. Double this, double that, double it again.
I am prepared for this to be unimaginably out of control and devastating under these conditions. The streams of false narratives and duplicity combined with people thinking that science is subject to mere opinions and their beliefs is sealing our fate in the respect.
