This cycle was all about getting rid of Trump. Biden was the safe candidate, the one who appealed to the widest spectrum of voters. I wanted Bernie but I was happy enough that Biden prevailed because this is all about pragmatism, about getting the job done: prying that monster loose from the White House. After all, so many lives hang in the balance now.
I worried that Kamala Harris would be his choice for veep. I thought she would rub other people the wrong way, that she would be a lightning rod for criticism, that her political history was flawed. Go ahead and castigate me for all that. I deserve it. I was wrong. And how do I know that? When I heard the news, I was unexpectedly delighted. In some part of me was a thing that dreams of a better America than we've ever known, a part that had been pushed down, muzzled and suddenly rose triumphantly to the surface.
My first thought when I heard the news: Oh boy, Pence is toast in a debate! Then I thought of Senator Harris's personal struggle, her work ethic, her accomplishments, and what this must mean to her, and to "that little girl" inside her. As Pragmatic Nuxvomica lay smacked down on the floor, a beaming Dreamer Nuxvomica gave him a hand and helped him up, and told him it's all gonna be okay. He told him what this means to African-Americans, and Asian-Americans, and, thanks to Malaise, Jamaican-Americans, immigrant Americans and their children and grandchildren, like me, and beyond all that to women Americans, and woman-loving Americans, and smart Americans and caring Americans, and all the Americans whose lives have always hung in the balance even when I thought mine didn't, and even all those "other people" I was afraid Senator Harris would rub the wrong way. At this point, Pragmatic Nuxvomica said, hold it, Dreamer-boy, you're getting dangerously close to running out of Americans!
It is rare that my perspective can turn on a dime that way. And for that, I am in awe of our future president. Senator Harris is a bold, smart and inspiring person and Vice President Biden made a bold, smart and inspiring decision. I bow, smiling, before it.

(4,878 posts)I think the more you learn about her, the more you will like her. Pragmatic and progressive, she can bring the compassion, as well as the fierceness we will need in this fight against the GOP.
Biden deserves a lot of credit for his choice of VP.

It seems to be a good thing that she dropped out when she did.. it all worked out amazingly well, I think.

(4,878 posts)I'm beyond happy and I know Joe and Kamala will be a formidable team. Biden/Harris has a really good ring to it.
I did see the video tweet, but not the other two. Thanks very much for sharing!
Hope you and yours are keeping safe and well out there.

(4,244 posts)After watching MF45 supporters fluff him, I cant hold public figures in awe anymore. They are people and flawed. Treat them as such.

Superheroes doing super things is just kind of expected, and therefore, no reason to inspire awe.
We're lucky when human beings achieve the extraordinary.

(100,103 posts)It's going to take a hell of a lot to get the smell of stupid out of the White House, but Biden can and will clean up Trump's mess!

(47,600 posts)That hasn't happened before! But I have to say, I still was more thrilled yesterday that I could have anticipated. I don't know, something just clicked and it appears to have happened to a lot of people.
Also, this is a big turning point in a presidential campaign. Now everything feels more real and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. There is such an air of optimism, something I haven't seen or felt in a long time.

(297,673 posts)feel more real now that VP Biden has his running mate, Kamala Harris!
PatSeg
(47,600 posts)but more optimistic than I have been for a long time and I can picture this pair in the White House, undoing all the damage and making history.
You know, I've always been a big supporter of Joe Biden and have thought he'd have been an excellent president for many years now, but initially I didn't want him to run this cycle, as I thought his time had passed. Now, however, I think he is the perfect person at this particular time in history and Kamala is the perfect VP to have at his side. I know my initial reluctance was because I tend to be protective of Joe, but clearly he was not done yet.

(297,673 posts)until all the votes are counted. I've been this way since bush VS Gore.
Now I know not everything is as it seems and there is no limit to what republicans will do to win. It was because of Bush vs Gore that I became obsessed with politics and ended up on Democratic Underground as well.

(297,673 posts)get on DU.. that I had read about in a Nation Magazine.
And here we are.

(47,600 posts)for any kind of liberal media. Being newspapers and cable TV were very disappointing, I ended up finding some sites on the Internet, DU being my favorite. I was here just reading the posts quite awhile before I became a member. Then one day I wanted to respond to something that was written and have been here as a member ever since.
The other sites were Daily Kos, Crooks N Liars, MoveOn.org, Alternet to name a few, but it was the community here there that made it a political home. I am still in close contact with friends I made here. We were all great admirers of Joe Biden, which seems to be quite a durable bond.

I remember telling my friends at work in New York that I had 5,000 posts on DemocraticUnderground. The looks on their faces! This was back in 2002 when I barely knew what was google was.
To Durable Bonds!

(47,600 posts)of needing to talk to other people about what was happening. At that time, most of the people on cable news were conservative voices, even MSNBC. After 9/11, any criticism of the Bush administration was viewed as unpatriotic and talk radio was all pretty much right-wing. Then along came Air America and Keith Olbermann and things started to slowly change.
So what did your friends at work think? Sometimes I'd forget that not everyone was plugged into the same news and commentary as I was and I'd be shocked when they had no idea what I was talking about.
Oh yes, those bonds have helped keep me sane. Now my daughter is part of that group on Facebook as well. We all needed a safe place.
Cha
(297,673 posts)bogus war, too.
Yes we do need a safe place.. now more than ever.

(47,600 posts)I'm much more discriminate about where I participate in discussions. I am much more aware and cautious now. Knowing that trolls can be everywhere, I can often tell when I'm being baited, which wasn't the case years ago. It takes awhile to learn how to safely navigate the inter-webs! I especially avoid Twitter threads. I've seen what it could do to people. I'll go there when someone posts a tweet that interests me, but I'm in and out before I can get roped into a pointless argument.
I'm more comfortable coming here. Even here, I have to be careful not to let someone push my buttons (sometimes it is way too easy). After the 2016 hack of DU, I think it is much more protected than before.
Have a good evening!

(206,016 posts)Though I voted in the primary and favored certain candidates over others, I never doubted that Biden was an excellent choice, Obama picked him after all and he has the experience, what we need desperately most of all to begin to clean up the mess that Trump and his equally destructive minions have left us with. That said, though I still have favorite candidates, I never doubted that Joe Biden has the experience and insight to choose a partner that will give us a win and get the job done. GOTV!
