Scientists Think They Found the Coronavirus' Weak Spot

https://futurism.com/found-coronavirus-weak-spot/amp

Scientists think they’ve identified a weak point in SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. And just like shooting torpedoes down the Death Star’s exhaust shaft, they think they can exploit this critical weakness to make new treatments.

It all comes down to a tiny region right next to the virus’s spike proteins, which latch onto new host cells, according to research published last week in the journal ACS Nano. Explaining the weakness requires a little bit of a primer on biochemistry, so bear with us, but the Northwestern University scientists suggest targeting this weak point could render the virus inert.

Much more at link. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

If the immune system could exploit such a weakness, it would be exploiting it already and Covid would truly be less than influenza and more like a cold.

The trick for vaccines is to have the immune system primed so that as soon as virus particles show up the immune system says "I know you! I know what to do about you!"

This would be more exploitable for treatment.

The article mentions treatment but not vaccine.

Each subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 trimeric spike protein has one polybasic cleavage site (R682RAR685).(1) The polybasic cleavage sites (R682RAR685) have not been reported for SARS-CoV or any other lineage B coronaviruses, and therefore, they are thought to be unique to SARS-CoV-2.(2,15,16) In comparison to the extensive studies carried out on the SARS-CoV-2 RBD, the polybasic cleavage sites have thus far not been widely investigated, and their function remains elusive. They are believed to be related to the viral transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2.(2,16) Moreover, they have been found to be essential for spike protein-driven viral entry into lung cells.(17)

Ain't it odd that Republicans, who preach that science is a hoax & scientific reports are fake news, are investing in stocks in companies working on a vaccine & pushing for warp speed results to save their unholy asses! They slash funding for scientific research but will bust a gut trying to take the credit for any scientific success.
