Last chance to get every voter registered that we can...
Can you help and put some DU boots on the ground in this crucial state?
I'm working with a great campaign operative in the Miami area, and can connect people who would want to participate in any of the other counties listed below.
If you live in Florida, or live in Georgia/Alabama and can work a day in the Panhandle (Tallahassee), you have a unique opportunity.
Voter suppression efforts in this election cycle have severely compromised the voter registration efforts that are crucial not only to our chances in November, but also to our very democracy. The Republicans essentially have one motto for this election: "if too many people vote, we lose."
NOWHERE HAVE THESE EFFORTS BEEN MORE VICIOUS THAN IN FLORIDA, WHERE THE STATE GOVERNMENT INTIMIDATED CIVIC GROUPS INTO SUBMISSION, BRINGING VOTER REGISTRATIONS TO A HALT UNTIL JUNE.
(see below)
THE NEED IN FLORIDA IS URGENT.
The decks are now clear for VOTER REGISTRATION to proceed unimpeded, but there are only 19 DAYS LEFT for people to register and be registered.
The deadline for voter registration in Florida is OCTOBER 9TH.
Now, I would say that I need your help, but that's not it - WE need your help. AMERICA needs your help.
If you want to know the single greatest thing you can do that involves acting - not talking - it is to register voters during these next 19 DAYS.
The Where: Florida
The Who: I am a former Obama fellow from the 2008 election cycle. I have been in touch with my OFA contacts from that campaign and will be coordinating with Organizing for America Florida to help get anyone interested out to voter registration efforts in Florida starting this weekend and continuing until October 9th.
I will be working with the brother of a high-ranking member of Obama's 2008 Florida campaign, who has a strong Florida knowledge-base.
The What: REGISTER, REGISTER, REGISTER!!!! This is all about voter registration efforts. We have 19 DAYS LEFT during which to register people. The urgency could not be higher. Governor Rick Scott managed to close down voter registration in Florida all the way until June.
The How: What I need to know are the following -
1) What days can you be available, and during what hours on those days (you can update this list as your schedule becomes clearer as we move from September 21st to October 9th)
2) What county/counties would you like to travel to/can you travel to (please see the list below) (please list all counties you might consider)
I suggest signing in here in the thread to let us know you are interested (it helps to inspire each other) - or you can just DU Mail me.
Once we've established when and where you would like to go, either I can help you coordinate with voter registration drives in those counties, or if you prefer, I can help get you in touch with the campaign in that area or provide the means for you to do that on your own.
Or go ahead and hook up with the campaign on your own through the website: www.barackobama.com - just let us know about your awesome voter registration activities.
I'm just here to help if I can help you get signed on to fight voter suppression by registering voters.
Here are the counties where there is the greatest need for voter registration efforts, in order of the raw vote margin of Obama's victory in 2008:
1. Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area; South Florida, East Coast)
2. Miami-Dade County (Miami, etc.; South Florida, East Coast)
3. Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach, etc.; South Florida, East Coast)
4. Orange County (Orlando area; Central Florida, Eastern part)
5. Pinellas County (St. Petersburg area; Central Florida, West Coast)
6. Hillsborough County (Tampa area; Central Florida, just east of Pinellas)
7. Leon County (Tallahassee area; Panhandle, below SW Georgia)
8. Alachua County (Gainesville area; North Florida, center of North Florida)
9. Osceola County (Kissimmee area; Central Florida, below Orange County)
Here is a link to a basic map of Florida, for reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Florida_counties_map.png
That's it.
This is how we fight back against voter suppression. This is how we win the election. This is how we protect the right to vote. This is a chance to materially impact this election. Please join me.
I've seen DU rise up in response to calls for action many times these last months. THIS IS AN URGENT CALL TO ACTION.
I look forward to working with you all.
ON VOTER REGISTRATION SUPPRESSION IN FLORIDA:
"Veteran League of Women Voters volunteer Mary Berglund had been registering voters since 1986, until the civic group a year ago abruptly halted its 72-year practice in the face of a new Florida law restricting voter registration campaigns.
'It just seemed so unfair and was so unexpected,' Berglund said of the 2011 state law that, among other things, imposed stiff fines for groups that failed to submit voter registration forms within 48 hours of obtaining them."

(42,770 posts)is it easy, once you get there to get appointed? You don't have to be a resident?

(4,507 posts)now, the campaign will give you a quick training on the do's and dont's of voter registration, like, "voter registration is a non-partisan activity" and teach you how to teach new voters (or people changing addresses) how to fill out the form, and then you can get started registering voters.
And I will say that I strongly believe in voter registration being a non-partisan activity.
I was - as one should be - glad to register anyone who wanted to register.
Because the truth of it is that the more people vote, the better it is for our party. Thus it has been and thus it will be for a long, long time.
In fact, the comedy of it in 2008 in Pennsylvania is that everywhere we went, people knew we were working for the Obama campaign, because hey, it's not like the other campaign had any interest in seeing more registered voters!
So yes, volunteers from out of state can absolutely register voters in another state.
And no, you don't have to receive any sort of appointment to register voters.
The only official people are the people at the county elections boards. You deliver completed registration forms to them, they check to make sure that the information on the registration card matches a human being in their system, and then they add that person to the rolls (and only they are allowed on that side of the desk).

(4,507 posts)As I said in the Ohio thread, this upcoming weekend could be the biggest weekend on the whole election calendar.
The field organizers I've spoken with all say this is prime time for volunteering (this next weekend).
So come on, get involved if you can!

(4,507 posts)it completely changed the map in Pennsylvania.
With Republican Rick Scott bringing voter registration to a full on complete standstill through intimidation all the way until June... I'd say there's a pretty desperate need to make up for lost time in Florida.

(4,507 posts)May need to make an edit to the OP.
Come on, people in those states! We need you!
Probably going to start directly recruiting...

the campaigns call it "the golden weekend" - the last weekend for voter reg, and the beginning of the big final push to election day - they need volunteers more for this weekend than any other one on the calendar...

(104 posts)I'd like to thank you for posting this incredibly important call to action.
I'm no Jeb Bush fan, but I'd take him any day over the deranged, tea party programmed skinhead currently sitting in the governor's chair.
I'm looking at the nine most important counties you listed; it is disheartening to me that my county isn't on the list, but I know why it isn't. Here you have to worry about your car becoming a target for vandals if you dare to display Obama 2012 bumper stickers. That's how utterly RED my county is. It's enough to make a Democrat feel a bit blue.
Anyway.... I am going to tweet your call to action. Obama 2012!
PS.... Bill Nelson too! It is absolutely CRITICAL we reelection Senator Nelson!

Anyway, thanks for the support!

I think it's a great idea but DUers come from all over the country and many live in swing states. There should be pinned threads giving registration information for more than one state.

(4,507 posts)The deadline is today in most states, though.
Although I know the deadline is later in, for example, Virginia.
But I know Ohio backwards and forwards, and on Florida, I'm just getting by on what I taught myself.
I'm not qualified to "run" a thread on any of the other states. I'm simply not.

(96,793 posts)We should really have a special forum just for registration information.
jsmirman
(4,507 posts)and because the efforts by the Sec. of State/Governor in those two states have been particularly virulent in terms of voter suppression.
I think it's pretty straightforward.

(10,942 posts)Republicans were allowed to create this mess because many voters from 2010 that would have voted for democrats sat on their thumbs. That dynamic can't happen again during the 2014 election, too much is at stake. Republicans that were responsible for voter disenfranchisement must be removed from public office.

(4,507 posts)Your avatar just cracked me up, btw. I didn't realize it would stay active in the reply screen, lol.
I got someone, working over the phone, to a place to register just in the nick of time in PA in '08 - it was like a dramatic rescue or something!
