He was sent out with the Marines.

(16,189 posts)Im sure you know far more than I do about it. My interest is simply as a mother. As one mother talking to another, she told me he would be safe, they promised him either a ship or a hospital. They lied. Maybe six months later, a young mans life was so very close to lost. His wife pregnant with the first child. They lied. Thats what recruiters do. They diverted his whole class into it, to the front lines. Thats what they needed, then. Im with Natalie Merchant when she sings in Gun Shy They're so good at making soldiers but they're not so good at making men. The tragedies are so endless.
It is also the most decorated with 22 Medals of Honor, 174 Navy Crosses, 31 Distinguished Service Medals, 946 Silver Stars and 1,582 Bronze Stars. Twenty naval ships have been named after hospital corpsmen.
This was in the Bush years, when soldiers were getting chewed up and spit out.

A Hospital Corpsman trained as a mortician, for instance, wouldn't be sent out in the field as a medic. So the chances of a Hospital Corpsman seeing direct combat is still slim. Unless he he or she had the correct NEC and that is NEC 8404 Field Medical Service Technician.
