John Oliver

There are some real stalwarts of TV comedians that have helped us survive the last 4 years. Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers.

I love Colbert, but I don't find him as funny without an audience in his regular forum. Trevor Noah has really done a fine job this last few months, as I find him hysterically funny with some good editing that makes his scathing social/political comedy even tighter.

I must say that I am MEGA-IMPRESSED with John Oliver, even in lockdown/without an audience. He is funny, captivating, deeply passionate, extraordinarily intelligent, eloquent, and captures my attention. And he doesn't need a live audience or laugh track to do so.

We need heroes. John Oliver seems to be one of the giants in this regard. Do you agree? Here's one of his latest:

I wish everyone would listen to the whole thing. Oliver goes right down to the mat with it.

It is still on my fridge too. He was not all sad and depressed after the election and wasn't urging everyone to try to get along and work together (Maher, Colbert, Maddow, etc were telling us to accept the fact and get along). Oliver was having none of that BS and he was angry. That was what I needed to hear. He told us to get a piece of paper, make a list, tape it to the fridge and do it...I did.

"Oliver dispensed with the election lament and urged viewers not to move to Canada unless you are a Canadian goose. Instead of leaving, he said to pay attention to how elected officials act on legislation and to vote when they are up for reelection in 2018. He suggested supporting, either through donations or volunteering, a list of organizations that work on behalf of immigrants, women and the LGBT community. Oliver also pleaded with his viewers to stay informed by by subscribing to newspapers, whether they be national outlets like the New York Times and Washington Post, regional and local papers or online news sites like ProPublica."

"Sticking with the opening theme of 2016 not being the best of years, Oliver spoke to people on the street about their thoughts on 2016. Not only did they not like the election results, there was sadness for the passing of Muhammad Ali, Prince and David Bowie. Oliver then blew up a large sign of the numbers 2016. With that, Oliver wrapped up the 2016 season of ‘Last Week Tonight.’ "
