That's him on the left. He had a jagged scar running down his forehead and nose. It came, he told me as a little kid, from a bayonet battle with Hitler himself, in a gully, during the war.
When I reached the age of 10 or so, I figured that dad was too young for WW2. In reality he was conscripted into the Royal Engineers in the occupation force in 1952 and got his scar from going through the windscreen of a jeep. His medal was for playing basketball.
We joked about this for yearsafterwards. RIP Dad.

(205,731 posts)My Dad was too young for the war, as well. But he did eventually serve in the Navy, was a radio operator on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He had some harrowing stories, like having to lash himself to a table on the bridge during a terrible storm, but none as colorful as those you had about your Dad...

(17,175 posts)I'm having a nostalgic moment, brought on by trumps casual dismissal of those who served in the armed forces of the US and any other country.
Both grandfathers were too old for active duty; one joined the UK home guard and was an anti-aircraft gunner from Blackpool Tower, the other was torpedoed on the Maltese convoys but survived. My uncle was parachuted into Arnheim in Operation Market Garden.
I'm not for war, but these men did their duty, as they saw it, and put their lives on the line. How dare a corpulent draft-dodger pass judgement on them.

(205,731 posts)I know that my Dad did not enjoy his military service, but that's what you did - part of your duty as a citizen. Both of my grandfathers served as well, my paternal grandfather joined up with his brother - he served in the Cavalry in WWI bringing ammunition to the front. I have his Army discharge papers - says that he was a "good horseman." And his brother (my great uncle) served at the front - earned the Silver Star for bravery under fire. I went to a ceremony honoring him just last summer, two Congressional districts sent representatives with flags that had flown over the Capitol - they were that excited to honor a veteran of WWI, their first.
And my maternal grandfather also served - he arrived in this country at 18 as an immigrant from Poland. And the way it was told to me was that they made him a citizen and sent him to France, another WWI vet. I never met either of my grandfathers, both died before I was born. But most families have stories like mine - and a history of service that they're proud of - the Trumps appear to be the rare exception. And Trump may finally have managed to come up with an attack that will offend just about every family.
