Vaccine trial halted due to "adverse reaction"

NYT

AstraZeneca halts a vaccine trial to investigate a participant’s illness.
The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca halted global trials of its coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday because of a serious and unexpected adverse reaction in a participant, the company said.
The trial’s halt, which was first reported by Stat News, will allow the British-Swedish company to conduct a safety review. How long the hold will last is unclear.
In a statement, the company described the halt as a “routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials.”

But I am adamantly opposed to rushing the vaccine for political expediency.

I am glad this potential health risk presented itself during the trial and they are investigating.

I am a firm believer in vaccines....

And just as firm a doubter in any rushed snake oil promoted and prompted to market ahead of adequate vetting.

Even then, even if it’s safe, I doubt that it will be terribly effective.

But I am glad that this company is practicing safe science and isn’t rushing an unsafe product to market.

"Earlier on Tuesday, nine leading U.S. and European vaccine developers pledged to uphold scientific safety and efficacy standards for their experimental vaccines despite the urgency to contain the pandemic.

The companies, including AstraZeneca, Pfizer Inc and GlaxoSmithKline, issued what they called a “historic pledge” after a rise in concern that safety standards might slip in the face of political pressure to rush out a vaccine."

"The companies said they would “uphold the integrity of the scientific process as they work towards potential global regulatory filings and approvals of the first COVID-19 vaccines.”

In a previous interview with Global News, Dr. Brian Dixon, a biology professor at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Fish and Environmental Immunology, said third-stage trials are also when researchers determine if there are any severe side effects associated with the vaccine."

According to Dixon, if more than one in 100,000 people have been found to experience severe side effects during a stage-three trial, the vaccine likely won’t be approved."

I know I went over 4 paragraph rule , wanted to get in last sentence . It would be good for everyone all over if one or more are successful , time will tell .

I am glad AstraZeneca and Oxford are not cutting corners and following procedures by the book.

there was no mention in the tv news tonite about this. I don't recall the companies saying anything when they announced they would followed science.
