VIDEO: Harris Demands Coronavirus Hearing With Trump Administration Officials
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, on Wednesday pressed Chairman Ron Johnson for a public hearing about the coronavirus with current public health officials. Harris pointed out that Trump administration officials were unwilling to attend todays hearing about protecting the United States from global pandemics.
Senator Harris: Thank you Mr. Chairman. I want to thank the panel for being here. Your experience in past public health emergencies and crises is exceptional and I think important to understanding how we should respond to the Coronavirus. However, the American people also, Mr. Chairman, need to hear from the officials who are currently responsible for addressing this and we need a public hearing with current government officials as soon possible. It is critical to my state of California. I have spoken with some of the current officials and I asked them why they are not here today. They did not have a good response for why they are not. In fact, they went on to say well we have to take time to prepare talking points. The American people deserve them to be here this morning.

(727 posts)paint AND turns out, unbeknownst to me, I was already infected & suffering from the virus but I DID! I told my husband, friends and brothers to start to wear masks, COVER THEIR EYES & stay the FUCK AWAY anyone else; told them to stay MUCH further than the 6 feet. See, I'd read about the novel CV19 being reported in Wuhan and IIRC, this was right after Thanksgiving. I remember telling the hubz right after I read about it AND I QUOTE..."Here it comes." He looked over to me and said "WHAT? Here what comes?" I looked at him & said, "CAPTAIN TRIPPS."
This conversation happened between my coughing my kneecaps off & trying like hell to catch my breath without falling over in a stupor. I've survived stage 4B metastatic cancer, preforated duodenal ulcer, visceral gangrene AND vibriosis. CoV19, (pretty much believe it was the original WUHAN strain), made me hurt, (felt like I'd been beaten & stop TF for the better part of 4 months) & sicker MUCH more than the cancer, (So HELP ME GOD!!)
I remember reading about a public bus in Wuhan where a man got on, visibly sick & coughing. He got into the back of the bus, as far away from the other passengers as was possible without getting off. Even though he was at least 14 feet away from the nearest rider, just about ALL of the riders AND the driver came down with it. China then mandated that folks stay AT LEAST 14 feet away from others who aren't demonstrably sick, MUCH further from those who are.

(24,311 posts)during the last week of February. A few days later the hospital closed the building to all visitors, elective surgeries and volunteers. Still closed, except doing some elective surgeries. I used to be at the desk in the surgery waiting room. The room has been empty since March 1st.
I was a little more informed than the average person because my wife is a retired RN and my daughter is an administrator and RN at the hospital.

(12,219 posts)We all agreed to cancel it, UFN.
Shortly after that, we decided to cancel a long planned road trip.
Soon afterward, California shut down everything but essential jobs/etc.

Its just that *we* took it seriously, Republicans did not.

(3,524 posts)Over the next week, we distributed most of them to our loved ones. We got a lot of funny looks, like "why are you giving me this?" But, when the country closed in March and people started to get scarred, our loved ones had a supply that even doctors were unable to find.
Honestly, we considered donating our small cache (about 30 masks were purchased, 20 of which were given away). But, health professionals told us that we were better off keeping them for ourselves, because the need would increase among the public and the supply would still not be there. We were told not to feel badly about keeping them because it wouldn't make a dent in the need of even one hospital.
I don't question our decision to both distribute to loved ones and keep 10 ourselves. I do, however, feel emotional about our inability to help others more. For instance, my best friend's brother was not on our list as we didn't have enough to spread out that widely. He got sick on March 29 and passed away on April 4. I can't help but wish that our reach had been wider.

(2,971 posts)I went on a trip to Phuket, Thailand in late February and didn't come back until March 11th or so. I kept up on the news while I was there, and one of my friends kept emailing me telling me I should cancel the rest of my trip and head back before I got stuck there. I still remember relaxing in the lounge at LAX with only one more flight to go before getting home when news broke that Trump was going to cancel all incoming flights from Europe. That particular lounge was full of people getting ready to leave on international flgjhts, and they were all hurridly canceling their trips because they wouiln't be able to get back home.
Once I got home, it was time to stock up, of course.

(25,981 posts)It was early March when I finished stocking up and stopped going anywhere. It's strange - by DU standards, I was at least a month behind. According to friends and family, I was two or three weeks ahead. I did manage to dodge The Great Toilet Paper Famine with ease, so there's that.
It's to their credit that both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were aware early, and immediately trying to heighten awareness and get things done. They're a great team, and it will be relief when they take the reins.
