OC sheriff's deputy accused of taking debit card from theft suspect and giving it to her son

https://www.ocregister.com/2020/09/09/oc-sheriffs-deputy-accused-of-taking-debit-card-from-theft-suspect-and-giving-it-to-her-son/

A female Orange County sheriff’s deputy is accused of taking a debit card from a theft suspect and giving it to her son, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Seven-year veteran Angelina Cortez, 41, has been charged with filing a false police report and faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison if convicted.

----------------------------------

Cortez and her training officer responded on Nov. 19, 2018, to a call of a man stealing wine and batteries from a San Clemente 7-Eleven store.

She is accused of taking the theft suspect’s debit card, putting it in her uniform shirt pocket and later giving it to her son, who then used it. The card was never booked into evidence. This case is not one of those involved with the department’s evidence scandal, a pattern of deputies not booking property evidence in a timely manner, if at all, said department officials.

Cortez is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 18. She is now on paid leave from the Sheriff’s Department, where she made $248,000 annually in pay and benefits, according to the latest report in Transparent California website.

Her salary and benefits package is 248K a year. That includes her healthcare and PTO. She probably makes about 65-75K a year. That is not outrageous by any means. I begrudge her none of that. Every American should have decent pay and excellent benefits.

She will lose this because she is a criminal and a sociopath. Luckily for her she lives in CA, so she should still be able to get affordable healthcare, so she can at least be healthy while she works some POS job.

She probably makes about 65-75K, with a good healthcare, PTO, and pension benefits package. Every American deserves that. No one deserves to lose healthcare, but they do deserve to lose a good job for being a criminal.

There is nothing at all wrong with that. You live in Sweden, correct? Your LEOs there probably make more, and have benefits even better. Your store clerks also have great benefits and a good salary, as they should. Everyone should.

compensation package per anum is outrageous. It is poor distribution of wages and has multiple negative knock-on effects.

I see a lot of interesting things in this write up that make me go hmmm.

Orange County, CA and a female officer named Cortez gets in trouble and there's outrage.

Then some info about how this is not connected to what..?

This case is not one of those involved with the department’s evidence scandal*, a pattern of deputies not booking property evidence in a timely manner, if at all, said department officials.

Um, okay. Could this be a set up?

Asking for a friend.

* emphasis mine.
