Lawrence Brooks

(CNN) Looking on from his front porch in New Orleans, Lawrence Brooks probably never imagined he'd see this day.

Today, the oldest known US veteran of World War II turned 111, and the National WWII Museum held a socially distant celebration for him

Upon reflection, what amazes me is that as a baby boomer virtually every adult I knew growing up was alive during World War II, almost all of those had survived the great depression beforehand, there was so much discussion of the war, of the Veteran status of people, TV shows, movies, and the like which one would watch with people who lived through it. Now, almost no one is left relatively speaking and one day somewhat soon the last veteran of the war will pass away.

Life is such a variable. Some of us live to 80, 90, over 100. Others depart way younger. Lifestyle, diet etc play a part but much of it is a genetic crapshoot.
