8. Why was this NOT reported to the police?

Yes, there is a way. There are several infractions of the law here.

Nearly every state has laws against defacing personal property, defacing political signs, threats, hate speech and some combination of the above.
To write that much on a sign without leaving prints and DNA would be nearly impossible. The handwriting is distinctive. If this happened in a neighborhood, it was done by someone who lives or regularly visits that area.

Just sharing it on social media does nothing. This should be a report in the nearest big-city newspaper as well as to the police.

Action, not just hand-wringing, is needed.

I said, as well as the police, that there was no way to find out who did it.

The cost of the loss of property does not rise to the level of felony, so the resources are not going to be applied as such.

But do go on with the pointless scolding.

I understand it may be difficult to determine who the guilty party is but laytonian is right. It would be a good idea to report it anyway so the incident is on the record. I'm so sorry this happened to your friend. Crap like this is why when I get my sign I'm going to booby trap it.

Since the property is not permanent and does not rise to the price point of felony, it's not going to get the resources from the local mounties that a rock through a window or spraypainting the siding would.

The owners are also white, so it's not a hate crime directed at the residents.

The police themselves stated that there was little to no chance that the culprits would be found.

It's a deep red county, and the likelihood of a community effort to find those who did this is nil.

I'm glad I have dogs. Even inside, they'd know someone was in my yard that long.

I'm still going to booby trap my sign with bird gel. I don't want anyone to get maimed or killed but I'm not above making them suffer just a little.

It was NBachers who recommended it on another thread. Scroll down to post 26. I wanted a deterrent to make people think twice about doing it again but wouldn't cause any real harm.

Here's the whole thread. It has other recommendations too: https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=14060793

Near Evansville and Henderson/Owensboro, KY.

People just north of Newburgh are even horribly xenophobic toward Amish people.
