(24,890 posts)All that they care about are some cells in someone else's body. That's it. Save the babies so we can abuse them as children and teens.
That and most (at least 70% to 30%) of the white people there are flat out racist (read - KKK is OK) assholes.
Don't get me wrong there are other very similar states. This thread is Kentucky fried.

I live in NJ, the second largest donor state. I have no problem helping other states.
What I have a problem with is those recipient states fucking us in the ass by electing people like McConnell.
We help them out and they jam us when Hurricane Sandy hit us and we needed help -- some of our money back!

RWers always profess self-sufficiency and pulling one up by their bootstraps--but they need finding and guidance to get their infrastructure and logistics in place to perform this function. They need college and VoTech training to give people new skills for the 21st Century.

(509 posts)Louisville and Lexington are really the only blue spots in the state and it's not enough to overcome the rest of the state. Democrats do win here though in state level races, but it's tough in federal races.

Ingroup Favoritism and Prejudice
https://opentextbc.ca/socialpsychology/chapter/ingroup-favoritism-and-prejudice/
It's a human trait believed to go back to people being cautious around other tribes, hence probably beneficial for survival and passing that trait to their offspring.
It's usually most extreme among people who seek simplistic answers, though, and that pretty much describes Republican voters too.

(4,167 posts)McGrath is the same type of person who we Democrats run against Mitch thinking that she can win voters who have no intention on voting for democrats....Booker would have brought in newer voters who otherwise wouldnt vote and was a more exciting candidate.....probably would have still loss, but we have to stop playing it safe sometimes
Wanderlust988

(14,565 posts)This recent Pew link really helped me understand the difference in certain states, especially in combination with the ideological percentages. Check the table near the bottom and specifically the three columns at far right:
https://www.pewresearch.org/methods/2020/08/18/a-resource-for-state-preelection-polling/
Those are the educational numbers from 2016. Education previously didn't mean as much but now there is a separation between working class voting Republican and voters with some college and especially with degrees voting Democratic.
The national average in 2016 electorate was 30% no college and 40% college graduates. Now, that 40% figure has been disputed by other sources which prefer 37% range. Regardless, the comparison is one state to another, and to that national number.
Kentucky and South Carolina may be viewed similarly from afar. They are not similar. That is why Harrison is faring much better than McGrath. Frankly, McGrath has been severely overfunded. That was wasted millions, as pointed out here a month or so ago.
Kentucky 2016:
36% no college
31% college graduates
South Carolina 2016:
34% no college
35% college graduates
Those may seem like minor differences...to the same types who don't want to believe that 37% to 40% conservatives in a given state is all the difference in the world.
Check state by state and you'll see that swing states have somewhat similar numbers to South Carolina, but slightly better. Pennsylvania is actually very close to South Carolina at 35% no college 36% college graduates. The only so-called swing state with numbers resembling Kentucky is Ohio at 37% no college and 34% college graduate. It is one of the reasons I am not a believer in Ohio, to lesser extent in 2020 but especially going forward. The foundational numbers simply are not there.
Louisville is not growing fast enough to make up for rural numbers elsewhere. Lots of these red states need another huge city somewhere. That's why Texas has potential, with so many large and rapidly growing cities, plus a huge untapped Hispanic population. Texas education numbers are already good at 27% no college and 41% college graduates.

(4,673 posts)education-wise, right behind Mississippi. This was in the 60's. Maybe Kentucky helped SC move up a rung
Wanderlust988
(509 posts)That's more than I can say for a whole lot of states, including Florida. We do have a progressive Democratic governor in office. Also, Kentucky was the last state in the south that still had a Democratic controlled legislature before we lost it a couple of cycles ago.

(2,248 posts)Have a good friend from northwest Tennessee, Paris, who goes to Paducah regularly. She explained that when you are in survival mode, you are proud of yourselves for using every tool available to keep going. They don't care to understand the mechanics; it is survival. Finding a pocket book to help with a new solution is beyond many. Not just Kentucky, but a glaring example. Of course there are other factors, but I was struck with the accuracy of her points.
The wild frontier of Kentucky.
Or is it just stupidity and racism?
